Each radial aspirating port (35) includes a check (44) valve to permit only one-way fuel flow from the vapor passage (15) to the fuel conduit.

Each intercom system is enabled for communications with a packet-based network (20) disposed at the service station site. The site operator terminal is similarly equipped with an intercom system that is enabled for communications with the packet-based network, thereby permitting voice communications between the operator terminal (38, 44) and customer (26, 32). The network is connected to a packet-based network (52) such as a WAN, Internet, or Intranet disposed apart from the refueling site. Remote facilities (54) may access the refueling environment by connecting to the network. In one form, the WAN includes the Internet, the LAN supports Internet Protocol (IP), ATM protocol, or frame relay protocol communications, and both the operator terminal intercom system and the various dispenser intercom systems are so enabled.

A system implements a communications protocol in connection with a refueling environment coupled to a remote facility. The remote facility is disposed apart from the fuel dispenser locations and is connected to a network such as the World Wide Web of the Internet. Regarding a customer at one of the fuel dispenser locations, a user identification such as credit card account information is sent to the remote facility. The remote facility then establishes an access connection with a network node such as a server, on behalf of the customer. The network communications follow a client-server session format and are correlated to the user ID. The remote facility sends a cookie element to the server that was previously set by the server during an initial Web site visit. The cookie contains state information such as a unique identification number generated by the server. The remote facility associates the unique identification number with the relevant user ID. The server uses the received cookie element to identify the corresponding user profile record maintained at the server side. The server generates customized content from the retrieved user profile record and sends it to the customer.

The central system controller (12) processes the transaction and directs the dedicated controller to render operative control of the fuel dispenser and an associated hydraulic arm assembly that selectively maneuvers the nozzle assembly into fueling engagement with the vehicle in an automated fashion. The central controller (12) is connected to other commercial retailers such as online merchants to permit the customer to request additional transactions unrelated to the refueling activity. The invention includes computer system to emulate a magstripe card reader connected to a fuel dispenser terminal based on radio frequency signals, the system having a first radio frequency transmitting antenna, a separate first radio frequency receiving antenna and a controller for electronically controlling the system which is connected to both the transmitting and receiving antenna. The controller is adapted to develop and emulate magstripe card reader signals based on signals received from the receiving antenna. A multiplexer is utilized for selectively communicating magstripe card reader signals from the controller to the fuel dispenser terminal system. A method is described of combining a radio frequency tag identification system having a multiplexer with a fuel dispenser system by disconnecting a magstripe card reader from a fuel dispenser system card reader input, connecting the radio frequency tag identification system multiplexer to the fuel dispenser system card reader input; and then connecting the previously disconnected magstripe card reader to the multiplexer.
