A method is described for estimating the serial or parallel nature and the location of an arc in a photovoltaic device, operating with direct current, comprising N (N=1 or N>1) chains (100, 101) of photovoltaic modules (1, 2, 3, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1), connected to a charge device (10) having a capacitive behaviour for the modules, said method comprising: a) detecting, across the terminals of each of the modules of each chain (100, 101), the evolution of the voltage over time during the formation of an electric arc, b) identifying the modules at the terminals of which a voltage variation occurs between a first zone (A) with a stable voltage and a second zone (B) with a stable voltage for a duration of at least 5 μs, which immediately follows said voltage variation, and identifying the voltage variation sign, c) estimating the serial or parallel nature and the location of the arc in the photovoltaic device.
