A process is disclosed for decreasing the emission of airborne pollutants from an oil refinery and for upgrading a paraffinic feedstream to olefins and/or aromatics. Flue gas from a fluid catalytic cracking process catalyst regenerator is cooled to supply the endothermic heat of reaction for a paraffin upgrading reaction, eliminating the need for an additional process furnace. The process further decreases airborne pollutant emissions by upgrading paraffinic fractions which would otherwise be burned as fuel.

A multi-stage catalytic olefin upgrading technique for converting lower olefinic feedstock to heavier liquid hydrocarbon product. The invention comprises converting in a fluid bed continuous primary stage reaction zone with shape selective medium pore zeolite oligomerization catalyst particles at least a portion of the lower olefinic components to intermediate olefinic hydrocarbons containing olefinic and aromatic components; cooling primary stage reaction effluent to condense at least a portion of the intermediate hydrocarbons; feeding a second olefinic stream to a serially arranged multi-reactor secondary stage for upgrading lower olefins; quenching partially upgraded secondary stage olefins with primary stage liquid; and further contacting the quenched mixture including aromatics from the primary stage with shape selective medium pore zeolite oligomerization catalyst in a high pressure fixed bed secondary stage distillate mode catalytic reactor at elevated temperature and high pressure to provide a heavier hydrocarbon effluent stream comprising distillate hydrocarbons.

A process and apparatus for mixing fluid catalytic cracking hydrocarbon feed and catalyst is disclosed. Lift gas passes through a first conduit which is axially aligned with a second conduit. A downstream end of the first conduit and an upstream end of the second conduit are located within a catalyst bed enclosed by a chamber. The second conduit axially injects catalyst and lift gas into an upstream end of an elongated fluid catalytic cracking riser while passing hydrocarbon feed into the riser through an annular zone about the upstream end of the riser. Preferably steam also passes through this annular zone. The process and apparatus achieves substantially uniform catalyst-to-oil ratio across a horizontal cross-section of the riser. A process and apparatus for control of the level of the catalyst bed in the enclosed chamber by employing a control gas stream is also disclosed.

A process for the production of ethers from an olefin containing feedstock. The process, which uses two stages for the production of ethers comprises, in a first stage, isomerizing an olefin containing feedstock over a thermally stable layered metal oxide type catalyst having interspathic polymeric silica between the layers so as to produce iso-olefins and then, in a second stage, reacting the resultant iso-olefins with alcohols in the presence of an etherification catalyst so as to produce ethers from the isoolefins.

A fluidized bed catalytic process for conversion of light olefinic gas feedstock containing ethene to produce hydrocarbons rich in C₅⁺ liquids, comprising the steps of maintaining a fluidized bed of zeolite catalyst particles in a turbulent reactor bed at a temperature of about 315 to 510°C, said catalyst having an apparent particle density of about 0.9 to 1.6 g/cm³ and a size range of about 1 to 150 microns, and average catalyst particle size of about 20 to 100 microns containing about 10 to 25 weight percent of fine particles having a particle size less than 32 microns; passing hot feedstock vapor upwardly through the fluidized catalyst bed under turbulent flow conditions; maintaining turbulent fluidized bed conditions through the reactor bed between transition velocity and transport velocity at a superficial fluid velocity of about 0.3 to 2 meters per second; and recovering hydrocarbon product containing a major amount of C₅⁺ hydrocarbons and containing C₃-C₅ akanes and alkenes in the ratio of about 0.2:1 to 5:1.
