A system and method for performing handover in a wireless mobile communication system are provided. In a Mobile Station, MS, -initiated scanning method of an MS in a wireless mobile communication system having at least two frequency bands with different central frequencies, the MS receives from a serving Base Station, BS, a mobile neighbor advertisement message including information about available radio resources of the neighbor BSs, transmits a new scanning request message to the serving BS, if the MS determines to measure Carrier-to-Interference and Noise Ratios, CINRs, of pilot signals from the serving BS and the neighbor BS, receives from the serving BS a response message for the scanning request message, including information about a BS which has reserved radio resources for a predetermined one of the at least two frequency bands, and measures the CINRs of the pilot signals in the predetermined frequency band.

In an adaptive feedback method for a cellular communication system having plural terminals feeding back channel information to an access point, the system selects one of an opportunistic mode and a polling mode as a feedback mode between an access point and the terminals on the basis of system and traffic parameters, sets up the access point and the terminals for the selected feedback mode, and feeds back the channel information from the terminals to the access point in the selected feedback mode. The adaptive feedback method changes the feedback mechanism adaptively to the system and traffic environment, making it possible to increase the system throughput as well as to decrease the MAC overhead regardless of the variation of the number of MSs.

A method for transmitting to one cell a frame including broadcast channels in a cellular wireless communication system in which a base station supports a plurality of physical channels corresponding to the broadcast channels. The base station generates the frame and transmits the generated frame to a mobile station. The frame includes separate broadcast channels for the respective physical channels. A position, in the frame, of a first broadcast channel for a physical channel capable of supporting a mobile station having the worst channel state is fixed in all of transmission frames. The first broadcast channel includes positional information of the remaining broadcast channels except for the first broadcast channel. The mobile station detects only an address of a broadcast channel for a physical channel allocated thereto from the first broadcast channel among broadcast channels belonging to the frame.

A method of constructing a micro- or pico-cells and a virtual macro-cell hierarchical cellular system structure comprising contiguous cells each containing a base station and sectors, wherein a virtual cell comprising three surrounding FDD macro-cell base stations over underlay the TDD micro- or pico-cells. In the proposed TDD/virtual FDD hierarchical cellular structure, a method of locating underlay cells' base station and macro-cells' base station to keep a least interference distance and a method of aligning the TDD micro-or pico-cells' sectors antenna beam direction with the FDD macro-cells' sectors beam direction are proposed, such that this system can suppress the additional inter-system interference and adjacent channel interference. The algorithm of utilising and borrowing the underused FDD macro-cells' resource and the mechanism of deciding the feasible resource borrowing region and smart antenna applicable region is proposed in such a way that the radio network controller and TDD micro- or pico-cell base stations can build up and decide the preference list of which sector, users, and resource to be served, which eventually resulting in the flexible and adaptive radio resource management of the RNC and achieving the optimal utilisation of the overall system resource.

A method of sending feedback information used for dynamic channel allocation, and allocating resources based on the feedback information in an OFDMA mobile communication system is provided. For this purpose, an MS feeds back channel gain variations at channel status measuring points distributed across a total frequency band to a BS. The BS estimates the channel status of the MS using the channel gain variations, and allocates optimal resources to the MS according to the estimated channel status.

A method and apparatus for scheduling the data packets transmitted to a plurality of mobile terminals supporting multiple quality of service (QoS) grades in a multichannel wireless communication system includes a storage device for storing queues and data packets of the mobile stations, the queue and data packets of each of the mobile stations being arranged in an order of the quality of service grades; and a scheduler for allocating resources of multiple channels to the mobile stations based on different scheduling metrics separately applied to the multiple channels according to the quality of service grades, each of the scheduling metrics applied to a particular one of channels being used to select one of the mobile stations whose data packets are transmitted through the particular channel; wherein entire data packets of the mobile stations are transmitted through the multiple channels when the allocation of the channel resources has been completed sequentially for each of the multiple channels.
