摘要： A moisture impervious package 10 for surgical elements such as retainers 18 having suture-needle assemblies positioned thereon. The package is provided with a top wall 14 of moisture impervious material having an access opening 24 die cut into the wall over which a closure flap 16 secured by a peripheral heat seal 32 to fully enclose the access opening. The top wall is then positioned over a bottom well of moisture impervious material whereby a retainer having the suture needle assemblies is positioned therebetween. A peripheral heat seal 30 then secures the top wall to the bottom wall to form the package.

摘要： A package (10) is disclosed for containing a plurality of combined surgical suture devices (30), particularly of the double armed type having a pledget (34) and used for cardiovascular surgical procedures (34) and used for cardiovascular surgical procedures. A backing panel (12) has a protective cover (26) adhesively affixed to one side and defines a plurality of straight elongated suture tracks (28) for reception of the flexible suture portion therein. An aperture (22, 24) is positioned at each end of each track to facilitate reception of the flexible suture portion into the track and drawing a vacuum therein to assist drawing the flexible suture portion into the track. Preferred embodiments include separate features such as a foam needle park (36) or an end flap (14) configured to support the suture needles beneath tabs (48, 50). Still another embodiment includes and end flap (14) which defines pockets (15) to receive the needles. A method for packaging such sutures is also disclosed.

摘要： Synthetic absorbable sutures (34) are filled with a stabilizing agent, preferably a mixture of glycerol and calcium lactate, and inserted into a retainer (10) having a narrow convoluted passageway (16). The retainer (10) is inserted into an open foil pouch (44) with a package stabilizing element (58), such as a paper sheet filled with stabilizing agent. The package containing the suture (34), retainer (10) and package stabilizing element (58) is sterilized, aerated, equilibrated to a relatively high moisture level, and sealed. Long lengths of suture and doubled-over and tripled-over (36, 40) suture may be withdrawn from the retainer (10) with low force without damaging the suture (34). Bends and kinks in the suture (34) are prevented so as to provide a synthetic absorbable suture (34) having highly desirable out of package hand and feel.
