An electrostatographic process cartridge (100) is detachably mountable into a cavity defined by mated modules forming parts of an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a copy-volume capacity limited by a waste toner sump capacity. The process cartridge (100) includes an elongate housing having walls (102,104,106) defining a process chamber (118); and a rotatable endless photoreceptive member (84) mounted within the process chamber (118) and to the housing. The photoreceptive member (84) has an image bearing surface for holding a formed toner image, a conductive layer, and a closed loop path within the process chamber (118). The process cartridge also includes a high voltage electrostatographic charging device (76) mounted to the elongate frame and along the closed loop path for applying a layer of electrostatic charge to the image bearing surface of the photoreceptive member (84); means (92) for forming on, and transferring from, the image bearing surface, a toner image; and means (68) for transferring the formed toner image onto a substrate. Importantly, the process cartridge includes a non-metallic electrically conductive grounding pin (160) mounted to the frame and in contact with the photoreceptive member (84) for aligning and grounding the photoreceptive member (84), so as to prevent photoreceptive member discharge current from passing to an adjacent machine imager module forming latent images on the charged image bearing surface.

The process cartridge (100) includes a housing having walls (102, 104, 106) defining a process chamber(118) and a rotatable cylindrical photoreceptor (84) mounted to the walls (102, 104) and horizontally within the process chamber (118). The cylindrical photoreceptor (84) has a fixed rotational closed loop path within the process chamber (118). The process cartridge (100) also includes plural process components including a toner image transferring component (68), a cleaning component (80), a charge erase light component (126), a charging component (76), an imagewise exposure component (122), and a development component (92), each acting along the closed loop path for consistently producing high quality toner images. The plural components each have a critical acting position spaced circumferentially along the closed loop path, and the critical acting positions include a 234° position for the toner image transferring component (68) so as to have reliable, precise sheet feeding to an image transfer point, and a short near vertical sheet path; a 0° position for the cleaning component (80) so as to prevent any leaking toner particles from falling backwardly and down, thus contaminating image carrying sheets moving from the transfer point to a fusing module; a 96° position for a ROS beam imagewise exposure component (122) so as to form a latent image effectively with the ROS beam without undesirable curvature effects from a cylindrical profile of the photoreceptor; and a 163° position for the development component (76) in order to minimize dark decay in the formed latent image prior to its development.

A charging apparatus for applying a uniform electrostatic charge to a charge retentive surface is provided. The apparatus includes a housing and an array of pin electrodes supported by the housing and positioned adjacent the surface in a non-contact relationship. The apparatus also includes a generally U shaped shield connected to the housing and at least partially surrounding the array of pin electrodes. The apparatus also includes a grid positioned across distal ends of the shield. The grid defines an effective charge length and an effective grid width. The apparatus also includes a power supply operatively coupled to the pin electrodes for supplying a predetermined current to each of the pin electrode. The power supply provides a predetermined voltage to the grid. At least one of the magnitude of the current, the magnitude of the voltage, the effective charge length, and the effective grid width being selected so as to optimize the charge uniformity, to minimize the sensitivity to photoreceptor grid sensitivity, and to minimize the ozone generated within the charging apparatus.

An insert (100), defining a predetermined spillover barrier height and a predetermined exit angle, is associated with the exit port (90). Different types of inserts (100) can be provided for operating the basic design of developer unit (10) at different print output speeds, or with different compositions of developer material.
