摘要:
An electrophotographic printing or copying machine includes a functional module which can be readily removed and replaced. The module includes a monitor in the form of an electronically-readable memory, which includes information about how the particular module is to be operated. In a remanufacturing process, certain combinations of codes in the memory are noted to determine whether individual parts in the module should be replaced.

An electrostatographic process cartridge (100) is detachably mountable into a cavity defined by mated modules forming parts of an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a copy-volume capacity limited by a waste toner sump capacity. The process cartridge (100) includes an elongate housing having walls (102,104,106) defining a process chamber (118); and a rotatable endless photoreceptive member (84) mounted within the process chamber (118) and to the housing. The photoreceptive member (84) has an image bearing surface for holding a formed toner image, a conductive layer, and a closed loop path within the process chamber (118). The process cartridge also includes a high voltage electrostatographic charging device (76) mounted to the elongate frame and along the closed loop path for applying a layer of electrostatic charge to the image bearing surface of the photoreceptive member (84); means (92) for forming on, and transferring from, the image bearing surface, a toner image; and means (68) for transferring the formed toner image onto a substrate. Importantly, the process cartridge includes a non-metallic electrically conductive grounding pin (160) mounted to the frame and in contact with the photoreceptive member (84) for aligning and grounding the photoreceptive member (84), so as to prevent photoreceptive member discharge current from passing to an adjacent machine imager module forming latent images on the charged image bearing surface.

The waste toner electro-sump subassembly (82) has an elbow shape including an upper arm portion (250) and a generally horizontal forearm portion (252). The forearm portion (252) includes a distal end, and a near end having electrical harnessless contacts (264) and connectors (266) formed therein, thereby allowing adaptation of the electro-sump subassembly, at the distal end, for use in various copy volume machines within a family of machines, without affecting the critical electrical and functional interfaces (204,266), at the near end, with other subassemblies of the cartridge module.

An electrostatographic process cartridge (44) detachably mountable into a cavity (42) defined by mated modules forming parts of an electrostatographic reproduction machine. The process cartridge (44) includes a housing having walls (116) defining a partially enclosed process chamber (118); a rotatable cylindrical photoreceptive member (84) mounted within a portion of the process chamber (118) and to the walls. The photoreceptive member (84) has a closed loop path within the process chamber (118) and an image bearing surface for holding a formed toner image. The process cartridge (44) also includes plural electrostatographic process toner image forming and transferring components (76) located along the closed loop path for forming a toner image on, and for transferring such toner image from, the image bearing surface; and a cleaning subassembly (80) located along the closed loop path downstream of the toner image forming and transferring components, for removing and transporting waste toner away from the image bearing surface. The cleaning subassembly (80) includes a curved portion of the walls including a blade mounting surface having a plane forming a blade mounting angle (134) with a tangent (135) to the image bearing surface; a cleaning blade (138) mounted to the mounting surface and having a cleaning edge contacting the image bearing surface at a desired cleaning angle for removing waste toner from the image bearing surface; a seal member (266) mounted into contact with the image bearing surface at a point upstream of the cleaning blade (138) so that the seal member (266), the blade (138), the image bearing surface and the curved portion of the walls, define the cleaning chamber (270); and a troughless waste toner transporting auger (170) mounted for rotation without a trough and directly over the image bearing surface within the cleaning chamber (270) for transporting and moving waste toner axially relative to the photoreceptive member (84) and out of the cleaning chamber (270). The troughless auger (170) has a first end, a second end, and a direction of waste toner movement over the image bearing surface from the first end to the second end a variable pitch for preventing image banding defects from undesirable waste toner accumulations.

A charging apparatus (76) for applying a uniform electrostatic charge to a charge retentive surface is provided. The apparatus includes a housing and an array of pin electrodes (346) supported by the housing and positioned adjacent the surface in a non-contact relationship. The apparatus also includes a generally U shaped shield (312) connected to the housing and at least partially surrounding the array of pin electrodes. The apparatus also includes a grid (336) positioned across distal ends of the shield. The grid (336) defines an effective charge length and an effective grid width. The apparatus also includes a power supply operatively coupled to the pin electrodes for supplying a predetermined current to each of the pin electrode. The power supply provides a predetermined voltage to the grid. At least one of the magnitude of the current, the magnitude of the voltage, the effective charge length, and the effective grid width being selected so as to optimize the charge uniformity, to minimize the sensitivity to photoreceptor grid sensitivity, and to minimize the ozone generated within the charging apparatus.

A charging module for applying a uniform electrostatic charge to a charge retentive surface is provided. The charging module is operably electrically connectable to a power supply for supplying an electrical bias to the charging apparatus. The charging module is mountable into a process cartridge. The process cartridge includes a cartridge mounting surface for cooperation with the charging apparatus. The apparatus includes a housing including a housing mounting feature and an electrode. The electrode is mounted to the housing and is positioned adjacent the surface in a non-contact relationship therewith. The housing mounting feature is adapted to be cooperable with the cartridge mounting surface to secure the placement of the charging module into the cartridge without the need for any installation tools.
