Described is a plant for manufacturing cement, which plant comprises a preheater (1) for preheating cement raw materials suspended in gases, a bottom cyclone (11) for separating the preheated cement raw materials and the gases, said cyclone (11) having a central outlet duct (6) for separated gases, a kiln (5) for burning the calcined cement raw material into cement clinker, as well as a bypass duct (14) for removing volatile components, such as chloride, alkali and sulphur, from the cement manufacturing plant, which bypass duct (14) is located after the bottom cyclone (11) viewed in the direction of movement of the gases. The plant is peculiar in that the bypass duct (14) extends into the central area of the central outlet duct (6). It is hereby obtained, that the exhaust gases extracted through the bypass duct (14) contain a significant smaller amount of dust and also that the entrained dust constitutes the finest fraction of the dust leaving the bottom cyclone (11) with the exhaust gases. This is due to the fact that the dust concentration at the point of extraction via the bypass due to the swirling action of the exhaust gases is lowest in the central area of the central outlet duct.

A description is given of an apparatus (1) for treating a bed (2) of particulate material which is supported by an aeration bottom (3), subject to the application of a conditioning gas being directed to and flowing up through the aeration bottom (3) and the material bed (2) from an underlying compartment (4) which comprises side walls (5), end walls (6) and a bottom (7). The apparatus is peculiar in that it comprises a number of inspection channels (8) which extend into the compartment (4) from its side walls (5), end walls (6) or bottom (7) and being provided with a number of inspection openings (9). Hence it will be possible during the operation of the apparatus to inspect the equipment in a significantly extended area of the compartment. This is due to the fact that the inspection channels make it possible to inspect equipment located in areas of the compartment which are not visible due to poor visibility from windows located in the side walls of the compartment.

A method for the reduction of mercury emissions from an industrial plant that utilizes a cement or minerals kiln that has a high level of mercury emissions during specific operating conditions. The invention reduces a large spike in mercury emissions typically seen in cement kiln systems when the in-line raw mill is shut-down and all preheater gases are vented to the stack directly. The invention diverts the preheater gases to a cooling device that functions as an adsorption reactor to provide mercury absorption during periods when the raw mill is not in operation.

A preheating apparatus for particulate material comprises a containment vessel, a floor ending in a central material discharge section, and a vertically oriented outer annular preheating section which circles the center section, with said annular preheating section having an outer wall and an inner wall having a lower side that is spaced above the floor to form an arch. A ram-type plunger feeder moves reciprocally from a first retracted position located closer to the outer wall to a second extended position located between the first retracted position and the material outlet of the chamber for contacting particulate material with said pusher face and moving particulate material under the arch and toward the material outlet. It has been discovered that in preheaters of this design the relative locations of the first retracted position of the feeder, the arch and the end of the sloped floor adjacent to the central discharge will have an influence on the movement of the particulate material toward the central discharge.
