The invention provides an optical sensor (10) arranged to monitor the ratio of the constituent components of a mixed system (14) where an optical characteristic of the system is dependant upon that ratio. The sensor (10) comprises first fibre optic means (16) for conducting light to the flow passage (12) wherethrough the mixed fluid system (14) flows, second fibre optic means (22) for conducting light returned therefrom to a means for detecting changes in the returned light and for determining the ratio of the constituent components of the system (14) in dependance upon the detected changes. Particularly, a fuel management system is described where the optical sensor is used to monitor the vapour/liquid ratio in a fuel supply to an engine.

An electrical power control system comprising one or more satellite power supply switching circuits located in close proximity to electrical loads to be controlled thereby and operatively controlled and/or monitored from a remote power control unit, in which the or each satellite power supply switching circuit is operatively controlled by a pulse train signal of constant frequency arranged to be transmitted to it from a remote switching control unit through a first data link, in which the satellite power supply switching circuit comprises a current-to-frequency converter for producing a status signal the frequency of which as proportional to the load current supplied through the power supply switching circuit and which status signal is arranged to be transmitted back to the remote switching control unit for monitoring and control purposes over a further data link.
