For this purpose, a selectivity module is provided for dividing a load current in an installation system having a housing (2) and a plurality of branches (K1 to K4). Moreover, the selectivity module (1) has a switching device (S1 to S4) in each branch for switching on and switching off a branch current and for output of information about a corresponding switching state. Furthermore, a control unit (4) is provided, which is connected to the switching devices (S1 to S4) for output of a status signal according to the information from the switching means. The system includes a transmitter which encodes data as a train of current pulses which modulate the d.c. supply voltage. A receiver at another location, connected to the same power source through pre-existing wiring, amplifies the supply voltage modulation, recovers the data waveform, and decodes it, to effect an action or display a measurement or status indication. A second transmitter combined with the receiver may transmit data similarly for reception by a second receiver combined with the transmitter, to enable two-way communication therebetween. Applications of the system include an emergency battery booster, an anti-theft battery disconnection device, a distress alert system, activation and reception of data from outboard devices, and remote measurement of fluid levels, temperatures and pressures.

The transmitter and receiver each include an inductor for providing a high impedance barrier to a data signal on the line, so as to isolate the data signal from the power supply and load. The receiver includes circuits for tracking the mid-point value of the data signal to produce a threshold value, and for comparing the threshold value with the data signal to produce an output signal. The threshold value is a controlled positive feedback signal derived from the output of the comparator by way of a positive feedback loop having a time constant approximately equal to the time constant of the transmitter.
