The invention provides a bill processor that substantially horizontally delivers bills one by one to an upper space of a stacking unit from a delivery unit (45), downward strikes and drops the trailing edge of a delivered bill in its delivery direction by impellers (52, 53), and stacks the bills in the stacking unit. The bill handling machine has a regulating member (70) that engages the leading edge of the bill in its delivery direction, which is delivered to the upper space of the stacking unit from the delivery unit (45). The regulating member (70) can be changed in position in the delivery direction according to the length of a bill in the delivery direction.

An object is to provide an image detector for bank notes which enables the cost to be lowered. Accordingly this has: a light emitting device 31 (31X) which is arranged facing an image detection sensor 24 (24X), and which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelengths ranges towards a bank note on a bank note transportation path 12, and detects light of the light which has transmitted through the bank note with an image detection sensor 24 (24X); a light emitting device 27 (27X) which is provided on the same side as the image detection sensor 24 (24X), which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelengths ranges towards a bank note S, and detects light of the light which is reflected from the bank note with the image detection sensor 24 (24X); an image detection sensor 24 (24Y) provided on the opposite side to the image detection sensor 24 (24X); and a third light emitting device 27 (27Y) provided on the same side as the second image detection sensor 24 (24Y), which irradiates light of a plurality of different wavelength ranges towards the bank note S, and detects light of the light which is reflected from the bank note S with the image detection image detection sensor 24 (24Y).

A coin discriminating method includes steps of irradiating a surface of a coin with light, photoelectrically detecting light reflected by the surface of the coin, producing detected pattern data of the surface of the coin, binarizing corresponding reference pattern data so that "1" is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level equal to or higher than a predetermined signal intensity level and "0" is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level lower than the predetermined signal intensity level to produce reference bright portion pattern data consisting of "1" pixel data and reference dark portion pattern data consisting of "0" pixel data, extracting bright portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference bright portion pattern data and dark portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference dark portion pattern data from the detected pattern data, and discriminating whether or not the surface of the coin is damaged to higher than the predetermined level by comparing the difference between the bright portion data signal intensity average value and dark portion data signal intensity average value with a threshold value of coins of a corresponding denomination.

A coin handling machine includes a coin sorting passage formed with a reference guide rail, a sensor for detecting optical properties and magnetic properties of the coins, a coin sorting opening along the inner wall of the reference guide rail and a coin sorting member provided in the vicinity of a side portion of the coin sorting opening on the side of the reference guide rail, the coin sorting member including a coin supporting section having a coin supporting surface for supporting one edge portion of the coin being transported in the coin sorting passage and a coin press section for pressing the coin, and it further includes a rotary solenoid for moving the coin supporting section between a coin support position where the coin supporting surface can support one edge portion of the coin being transported in the coin sorting passage and a retracted position where the coin supporting surface cannot support the coin and moving the coin press section so as to press the coin downward in synchronism with the movement of the coin supporting surface to the retracted position and a controller for driving the rotary solenoid based on detection signals from the sensor. The thus constituted coin handling machine can reliably drop a predetermined coin among coins fed into the coin sorting passage in the coin sorting opening, thereby sorting it without making the machine large.

A coin wrapping machine includes a discriminator for discriminating whether or not a coin is acceptable, a denomination of the coin when the coin is acceptable and whether or not the denomination of the coin coincides with that specified and counting coins of the specified denomination, a coin stacking device for stacking coins of the denomination to be wrapped, a reference stacked coin height data memory for storing reference stacked coin height data for each denomination of coins stacked by the coin stacking device, and a coin number discrepancy detecting device including a comparator for comparing a height of stacked coins and the reference stacked coin height data for each denomination stored in the reference stacked coin height data memory, the discriminator being made responsive to inclusion in coins of the specified denomination of new issue coins and past issue circulating coins for discriminating whether each coin is a new issue coin or a past issue circulating coin, and the coin number and discrepancy detecting device being made responsive to inclusion in the coins of the specified denomination of new issue coins and past issue circulating coins for causing the comparator thereof to select the reference stacked coin height to be compared with the height of coins stacked by the coin stacking device in accordance with the number of the new issue coins and the number of the past issue circulating coins determined based on a count made by the discriminator. The thus constituted coin wrapping machine can accurately detect whether the number of coins to be wrapped is more than or less than a predetermined number even in the case where new issue coins and past issue circulating coins of the same denomination are wrapped together.
