The band guide and the slider member are formed as an integral one-piece element. Therefore, when the band guide is attached to the external moving body (26), the slider member is simultaneously attached to the external moving body and firmly held in place.

Thus, the movement of the brake holder can be stopped even when air supply to the rodless cylinder is interrupted. As a result, waste of energy is prevented and safety of operation during initial adjustment of the cylinder is increased.

A slide table (18) is driven by the external carriage (44) of the rodless power cylinder unit (30) and guided by the guide rail. According to the present invention, the external carriage (44) is disposed on the side of the cylinder barrel (31) facing the guide rail (10). This construction allows the external carriage (44) and the slide table (18) to be accommodated within the height of the cylinder barrel (31). Therefore, the height of the linear actuating device as a whole can be reduced to substantially the same as the height of the cylinder barrel (31).

A rodless pneumatic cylinder includes main exhaust ports defined by the open ends (10, 11) of a pair of fixed tubular members (8, 9) that extend, respectively, into the cylinder body (1) from its opposed ends (2, 3). The main piston 14 of the rodless cylinder has an axial bore (18) formed in it in which is slidably mounted a small piston (19) that serves mutually to isolate the working chambers (16, 17) of the cylinder. The bore (18) carries seals (20, 21) adjacent to its opposed ends whereby, during motion of the piston (14), the bore (18) sealingly receives one or other of the tubular members (8, 9) at a pre-determined stage during the motion thereby effectively closing the main exhaust port (10 or 11). During further motion of the piston (14), air can, therefore, exhaust only through a throttled auxiliary exhaust port (12, 13) and such further motion of the piston (14) is thus cushioned. The arrangement provides for a greater extent of cushioning relative to known arrangements in which the working chambers (16, 17) are mutually isolated by a barrier fixedly secured in the bore (18).

Die vorgesehenen Dichtbänder (7, 8) sind durch eigene Klemmstücke (11) im oder am Längsschlitz (6) befestigt. Die Zylinderdeckel (12) sind jeweils an einer Seite mit einem Anschluß (17) für die Zu- und Ableitung des Druckmittels versehen. Da die Dichtbänder (7,8) von den Deckeln (12) unabhängig durch die eigenen Klemmstücke (11) befestigt sind, können die Zylinderdeckel (12) in verschiedenen Lagen am Zylindergehäuse (2) angebaut sein. Sie sind zu diesem Zweck rotationssymmetrisch ausgebildet, was insbesondere auch für die im Inneren der Zylinderdeckel (12) geführten Druckmittelkanäle gilt. Die Zylinderdeckel (12) können dabei jeweils so am Druckmittelzylinder (1) montiert werden, daß der jeweilige Anschluß (17) für das Druckmittel an einer gut zugänglichen Stelle des montierten Druckmittelzylinders (1) liegt.
