The hub includes a first cavity between the hub and the supporting plate for housing a spring (109), and a second cavity between the hub and the reel for housing a flat flexible cable (106) (FFC). The spring is wound in a first direction, while the FFC is wound in a second direction. The FFC includes a first end for electrically coupling to a female jack connector (119) of a device. A female connector (107) is electrically coupled to a second end of the FFC for engaging a male jack connector of user-provided headphones (116). When the reel (105) rotates in the first direction, the spring (109) tightens and the FFC loosens. When the reel (105) rotates in the second direction, the spring (109) loosens and the FFC tightens.

When the headset is worn by the user in operational position, the dorsal cord connection node and the suboccipital cord connection node are to be placed on the dorsal surface of the neck, and cords in sections between the earphones and the suboccipital node are to be disposed above the auricle and on the surface of the head in taut state. In some embodiments the headset is a multifunctional portable device comprising an electronic unit, control means, cord winding and storage means, additional batteries, and microphone arrays, which makes it possible to keep the headset on the body throughout the day.

The ear buds may connect to a recharge port on the wireless phone, and be charged when the wireless phone is charging. When in its attached home position, the ear-mountable speaker may tuck into a mating cavity. A latch or magnet may assist in attaching the integrated, detachable ear bud to the wireless phone.
