A nurse adapter mechanism for an agricultural seeding implement converts an air seeder meter box into a nurse inductor box (20) to convey seed particles (S) to the singulator of a planting mechanism. The nurse adapter mechanism is detachably mounted on the meter box of the air seeder to receive a supply of seed particles therefrom and utilises the normal air flow (13) for the metering mechanism to effect a nursing of seed particles to a planting mechanism. The nurse adapter mechanism diverts the stream of air (13) into engagement with a pile of seed particles (S) and induce the entrainment of the seed particles for conveyance thereof to the remote planting mechanism. A partition wall divides the nurse induction mechanism into a seed side and an air side. The seed side receives the supply of seed particles from the hopper (12) and allows the seed to pass through a passageway into the air side for engagement by the stream of air. Divider walls (32) are provided to isolate each discharge tube from the other discharges tube so that the planter mechanisms can provide a continuous supply of seed particles. The discharge tubes (22) pass through the seed side of the nurse adapter mechanism in a stacked pair, modular configuration with the respective discharge tubes (22) being adequately separated to permit the passage of seed particles therebetween.

A method for seeding and fertilizing comprises: (a) forming in soil a first furrow 19 inclined to the vertical and having an upper and a lower 74 surface by undercutting an area of soil and raising a part of said undercut area to open the furrow 19; (b) inserting fertilizer 78 toward the bottom 80 of the first furrow; (c) forming a second furrow 72 in the lower surface of the first furrow intermediate the top and bottom of that surface; (d) directing soil from the second furrow toward the bottom of the first furrow to thereby cover the fertilizer with soil; (e) inserting seed 84 into said second furrow 72; and (f) closing the first and second furrows. This method avoids hairpinning of stalks and reduces soil disturbance whilst allowing fertilizer to be positioned below and offset from seed.

An air seeder (10) is provided with a control system for controlling the velocity of air flowing through the product delivery tubes (21) between the product storage tanks (12-14) and the planting mechanism (5) for delivering the product into the ground. A multiple tank air seeder would be provided with a bank of product delivery tubes (21) for each product storage tank (12-14) and with an air damper mechanism (25) incorporated into each respective bank of product delivery tubes (21). An electric actuator (32, 34, 36) is mounted on the air seeder to connect to each respective air damper mechanism (25) and effect the movement thereof between a fully closed and a fully opened position and, thereby restricting the movement of air through the product delivery tubes (21). The control system includes a control panel (42) from which the electric actuators (32, 34, 36) for the air damper mechanisms (25) and an electric actuator (30) for controlling the rotational speed of the fan creating the flow of air through the product delivery tubes (21) can be controlled. The air velocity is controlled by setting a base fan speed through the control panel (42) and then sequentially setting the rotational position of each respective air damper mechanism (25) so that each bank of product delivery tubes (21) can have a different resulting air velocity for proper delivery of the product, e.g. seed or fertilizer, through the respective product delivery tubes (21).

A method and apparatus for improved agricultural seeding; especially useful in no-till direct seeding. In the illustrated embodiment an inclined furrow (19) is cut with a rotating disk (16) that is inclined with respect to the vertical and the horizontal; the furrow (19) has a raised lip (15), and straw and the like stalks are cleaved during the cutting. Seed is inserted by known means, and then a packer wheel (34), preferentially inclined in vertical and horizontal directions opposite to those the disk is inclined, runs across the lip (15) and closes the furrow (19). Advantages include substantially reduced energy required for the furrow cutting, less weight required on the furrowing disk, more even seeding depth, less hairpinning, less soil disturbance, and less weed seed burial.
