A seed metering system, for use on a row crop planter, selects individual seeds from a seed reservoir and dispenses the seeds singularly at a controlled rate. A direct drive seed metering system includes a seed disc having a plurality of suction apertures with a recessed pocket adjacent to an aperture. The recessed pockets act to agitate seeds in the seed reservoir and to direct seed flow towards the apertures. A seed path relief system provides for allowing the placement of the seeds such that they are released from an outer edge of the seed disc. An adjustable seed singulator is mounted adjacent to the face of the seed disc where inner and outer blades are adjusted radially to compensate for the singulation of various seed sizes and shapes. The seed disc is driven via engagement of an internal gear with the external gear of an independent drive motor.

The seed distribution tower of an air seeder splits a single, primary stream of conveying air and seeds into a plurality of secondary streams for delivery to openers that deposit the seeds into the ground as the seeder advances. As seeds enter the head of the tower in an upward vertical direction through an inlet at the bottom of the head, they are scattered 360° in a horizontal direction by an inverted, overhead distribution cone. The inlet through which the seeds enter the distribution head has an eased configuration to reduce turbulence and promote laminar flow within the head during the dramatic transition from vertical to horizontal movement. Sensitive components such as tram line valves, solenoid actuators, and blockage sensors are protectively housed within the interior of the distribution head to avoid exposure to hostile environmental elements. The outlets through which the secondary streams exit the head are constructed as modules that can be individually installed and replaced without disassembling the entire head. Shut-off valves and/or flow sensors may or may not be incorporated into certain or all of the modules to provide optimum user flexibility.

A distribution apparatus (10), shown in the form of an agricultural air seeder is disclosed having sensors (110, 112, 114, 116) to measure the mass flow through the distribution system (34), sensors (104) to weigh a tank (12, 14) and a product therein, and sensors (106) to measure the quantity of product in the tank (12, 14). The sensors (104, 106, 110, 112, 114, 116) are used to measure the change in the quantity of product in the tank (12, 14) during a calibration process where the apparatus (10) is operated over an area and the number of rotations of a meter (40) are recorded. The data is then used to determine a mass flow rate per revolution of the meter (40). The method further comprises monitoring in which an 'area to empty' and 'product needed' to complete a field or task is displayed to the operator.

A direct sowing machine comprising coulter structures (3) including coulter disks (4) for cutting and opening furrows in soil for conducting seed into there is characterised in that it comprises a rake (8, 9) in front of the coulter structures (3) for leveling and removing off straw residue and other such matter from the way of the coulter disks. The rake is advantageously consisting of tines (8, 9) placed in one or more rows such that for each coulter disk (4) there is a corresponding tine (9) placed in alignment with the coulter disk. The tines of the rake clean the way of the coulter disks and level heaps of straw on the surface of a field whereby the coulter disks are pressed evenly into the soil and the result of the seeding is good and of uniform quality.

The inventive distributor also comprises a second row of product charging tubes, preferably Venturi tubes (41, 45), through which a second airflow flows and which are provided with an opening for charging the products into the second airflow. In order to simplify the configuration of the distributor (26, 27), a selector valve (52, 53) is provided which has a first position in which the products are fed to the first row of product charging tubes, and has a second position in which products are fed to the second row of product charging tubes.
