摘要: A storage system (1) effectively manages the total capacity of hard disk drives (44) to store block-basis data and file-basis data with a shared storage medium and a managing means (30) for managing all the storage areas in the storage medium. When block data and address are input through a fiber channel port (50), a block data input/output means (10a) converts its data format to a data format that is internally applied by the storage system (1). When file data and address are input through an Ethernet port (52), a file system (20) converts its data format to the data format internally applied by the storage system (1), such as the block data format. The file system (20) derives the address of a logical volume from the received address information and translates file data to block data. The managing means (30) derives the address of a logical volume (35a, 35b) to which to write block data from the address information delivered from the block data input/output means (10a). The managing means (30) translates this address or the address passed from the file system (20) to a physical address and writes data to or read data from a hard disk drive (44) with the physical address.

摘要: An on-line commerce method and apparatus. A user can select products for purchase from plural merchant servers (40) by examining product information stored on a shopping server (20). The product information related to selected products is verified by accessing a checkout page of each merchant server (40). The verified information is then presented to the user at a client browser (14) for confirmation. Upon confirmation, buy procedures are executed on each merchant server (40) to purchase the products using existing account information for the user at each merchant server (40).

摘要: An alloy having a composition, by weight, of about 0.025 % or less carbon, about 0.5 to about 4.1 % manganese, about 5.5 to about 6.2 % silicon, about 11 to about 15 % chromium, about 9.0 to about 15.5 % nickel, about 0.8 to about 1.2 % molybdenum and about 0.8 to about 2 % copper and the remainder being essentially iron with incidental impurities. This composition results in lean alloy content in a high silicon austenitic stainless steel for concentrated sulfuric acid service while maintaining a corrosion rate similar to and competitive with existing alloys for such service. Acceptable characteristics were found when hot working was carried out in the range of about 2100 DEG F to about 2200 DEG F. Annealing in the range of about 1925 DEG F to about 2025 DEG F is preferred, as is rapid water quenching after annealing.

摘要: An agent based system assists in preparing an individual for an upcoming meeting by helping him/her retrieve relevant information about the meeting from various sources based on preexisting information in the system. The system obtains input text in character form indicative of the target meeting from a calendar program that includes the time of the meeting. As the time of the meeting approaches, the calendar program is queried to obtain the text of the target event and that information is utilized as input to the agent system. Then, the agent system parses the input meeting text to extract its various components such as title, body, participants, location, time etc. The system also performs pattern matching to identify particular meeting fields in a meeting text. This information is utilized to query various sources of information on the web and obtain relevant stories about the current meeting to send back to the calendaring system. For example, if an individual has a meeting with Netscape and Microsoft to talk about their disputes, the system obtains this initial information from the calendaring system. It will then parse out the text to realize that the companies in the meeting are 'Netscape' and 'Microsoft' and the topic is 'disputes'. It will then surf the web for relevant information concerning the topic. Thus, in accordance with an objective of the invention, the system updates the calendaring system and eventually the user with the best information it can gather to prepare for the target meeting. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the information is stored in a file that is obtained via selection from a link imbedded in the calendar system.

摘要: A system includes a communication module for downloading workspace data (135) from a remote site, an application program interface coupled to the communications module for communicating with a workspace data manager (160) to enable manipulation of the downloaded workspace data and thereby create manipulated data, and a general synchronization module (130) coupled to the communications module for synchronizing the manipulated data with the workspace data (135) stored at the remote site. An instantiator requests the workspace data manager to provide an interface for enabling manipulation of the downloaded workspace data. The workspace data manager may create another instance of the interface or may provide access to its only interface to enable manipulation of the data. A data reader may translate the downloaded workspace data from the format used by the remote site to the format used by the workspace data manager. Upon logout, a de-instantiator synchronizes the data with the global server and deletes workspace data. The system handles the situation where the data stored at the remote site has not changed therefore includes the downloaded data, and the situation the data stored at the remote site has been modified and therefore is different than the downloaded data.

摘要: The disclosure includes a computational system implemented with respect to a novel computational architecture (10) for operating an externally defined data based on client defined rules (14). In one of the implementations, the architecture is utilized in a billing and customer service program. The architecture includes an engine unit which includes a number of processing modules (12) which internally operate on generic data units that are independent of the particular application. A metadata engine (14) receives externally defined data and relates the externally defined data to the generic data units for use for the engine unit. A rules based engine provides to the engine unit information related to the client defined rules. In this manner, the engine unit can be reused in a large part in a variety of different environments.

摘要: In a sequence homology detection aspect of the invention, a computer-based method of detecting homologies between a plurality of sequences in a database and a query sequence comprises the following steps. First, the method includes accessing patterns associated with the database, each pattern representing at least a portion of one or more sequences in the database. Next, the query sequence is compared to the patterns to detect whether one or more portions of the query sequence are homologous to portions of the sequences of the database represented by the patterns. Then, a score is generated for each sequence detected to be homologous to the query sequence, wherein the sequence score is based on individual scores generated in accordance with each homologous portion of the sequence detected, and the sequence score represents a degree of homology between the query sequence and the detected sequence.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for operating on a non-text (voice or fax) message include for each of a number of voice messages, searching each voice message for signal samples having one of a plurality of sets of pre-defined characteristics (such as any seven or ten digit number which is then assumed to be a telephone number) as diclosed. For each signal sample found to have one of the sets of pre-defined characteristics, the found signal sample is associated with an equivalent text string and this text string is stored in an envelope for the message. Based on a user input, the messages may be searched for a given text string and on finding a message envelope containing the given text string, such message may be operated upon.
Other modifications in accordance with the scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

摘要: In a network (20) wherein replicas of a data object reside at a plurality of nodes (30A, 30B), a node has a lock manager (73) which handles requests for access to the data object by processes of differing nodes. When a process native to the node desires access to the data object, the lock manager sets a lingering lock flag in a lock table (220) for the data object. Setting the lingering lock flag indicates that the data object can only be accessed at the node to the exclusion of processes of other nodes. The lingering lock flag can remain set after the process native to the node terminates access to the data object, thereby enabling a successive access to the data object by the same process or another process native to the node, such successive access being without notification to other nodes of the network.
