A recoverable article comprising a recoverable fabric, optionally with a matrix material, is provided with a closure whereby can be retained in the wrapped around configuration. The article is suitable for environmentally protecting cables and pipes and joins therein.

For heat-setting tubular articles (such as can bodies) of an at least partly biaxially oriented crystallisable polymer, preferably a saturated linear polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, e.g. for thermally processable food containers, a tube (26) of the polymer is fitted over a mandrel (101) and clamped at its ends to the mandrel at a temperature belowthe glass transition temperature of the polymer. The tube is then heated, e.g. by inserting a heater (28) into the interior of the mandrel, above the temperature to which it is to be heat-set (at least 60°C above for PET) whereupon it shrinks into contact with the mandrel but is restrained from axial or further radial shrinkage. The tube and mandrel are cooled to below the heat-set temperature and the tube may then be cut by knives engaging in circumferential grooves (22) into can body sections. Contact between the tube and mandrel is released, e.g. forforcing compressed air out through small holes (16) in the mandrel surface to allow the tube and mandrel to be separated.Tubularbodies with one closed end can be heat-set on a mandrel with a correspondingly shaped end.

A branch-off between telecommunications cables (5) may be sealed by means of an electrically heat-recoverable sleeve (1) and a branch-off clip (2) which holds together circumferentially spaced portions of the sleeve (1) between the branching cables (5). The clip (2) has an inner leg of heat-activatable sealing material which in use is positioned in the sleeve (1) between the cables (5). The sealing material is activated by the heat generated in the sleeve (1) during recovery.

Polyamides comprising substantial amounts of Nylon-11 and/or Nylon-12 units are cross-linked by irradiation in the presence of an unsaturated cross-linking agent, preferably triallyl isocyanurate. The cross-linked products are particularly useful in the form of heat-recoverable shaped articles, eg. heat-shrinkable tubing.

A wraparound recoverable sleeve (1) for encapsulating cable splices has a flap (7) which underlies opposing edges (4) to provide a seal between them. The flap has recoverable longi- tudinai corrugations (8) which reduce the tendency of edges of the flap to dig into the overlying sleeve as the sleeve recovers. The lateral flexibility of the flap (7) is increased by the corrugations (81, and longitudinal bending is resisted until the corrugations (8) have recovered away and the material of the flap (7) softened. The corrugations (8) may be filled with a sealing material.

A method of strengthening the neck portion (2) of a hollow blow-moulded bottle-shaped container (1) of a biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate resin, which comprises heating the neck portion (2) to between 140° and 170°C, inserting a die pin (6) of a predetermined outer diameter into the opening of the neck portion, blowing cooling air or gas on to the neck portion, thereby shrinking and whitening the neck portion on to the die pin. Thus, the method prevents improper shrinkage deformation of the neck portion due to such thermal treatment of the bottle-shaped container.

A cable breakout article (78) which is formed of a polymeric material and which is preferably heat-recoverable comprises a body portion and at least two tubes or outlet portions (91 to 94) leading from apertures in the body portion. The length and flexibility of the tubes (91 to 94) is such that at least one of them can be bent away from the other(s) to allow operations such as heat recovery to be carried out on an end portion of one of the tubes in isolation from the others. Preferably one or more of the tubes (95) is corrugated at least near its end adjacent to the body portion (78) so as to assist bending.
