This invention relates to a heating method for shaping a thermoplastic bottle, which comprises inserting a heating member into the inside of a preform made of a thermoplastic plastic or the bottle and heating the preform or the bottle from both inside and outside with the heating member and a heater disposed outside in the heating process. The present method enables to control individually and accurately the temperature of this heating member, provide the heating member with a radiation energy distribution which changes in the longitudinal direction and carrying out heating suitable for the bottle to be shaped in order to produce a high-quality plastic bottle. Furthermore, the method of the present invention comprises sealing a metal which melts in a desired temperature range into the heating member, keeping the heating member at a predetermined temperature accurately for a long period of time by utilizing the latent heat of the metal to produce a high-quality plastic bottle. Similar means is used for heating the mouth of the plastic bottle to attain the optimum crystallization of the mouth.

Zur Verbesserung der Eigenschaften von biaxial orientierten, blasgeformten Behältern aus PET wird der zum Aufsetzen eines Verschlusses dienende Mündungsbereich des Behälters thermofixiert, d.h. bei erhöhter Temperatur kristallisiert. Erfindungsgemäß erfolgt das Thermofixieren am Mündungsende eines Vorformlings und das vorher thermofixierte Mündungsende wird anschließend in den fertigen Mündungsabschnitt umgeformt. Damit wird die Maßhaltigkeit des Mündungsbereiches verbessert.

A method of strengthening the neck portion (2) of a hollow blow-moulded bottle-shaped container (1) of a biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate resin, which comprises heating the neck portion (2) to between 140° and 170°C, inserting a die pin (6) of a predetermined outer diameter into the opening of the neck portion, blowing cooling air or gas on to the neck portion, thereby shrinking and whitening the neck portion on to the die pin. Thus, the method prevents improper shrinkage deformation of the neck portion due to such thermal treatment of the bottle-shaped container.

Sleeve molding apparatus and methods for making multilayer injection molded plastic articles in successive mold cavities. In a first molding step, an inner sleeve is molded on a core in a first mold cavity, which may comprise a full body length sleeve or only a partial sleeve, such as an upper neck finish portion. The sleeve and core are withdrawn from the first mold cavity while the sleeve is still warm, and transferred without substantial delay to a second mold cavity for injection molding an outer layer which bonds to the inner sleeve. By transferring the sleeve at an elevated temperature into the second mold cavity, an improved bond is formed between the inner sleeve and outer layer which resists separation during a later reheat stretch blow molding step, and/or in use of the resulting article. In a preferred embodiment, a pasteurizable beer container is provided having a finish-only sleeve of a PEN polymer. In a second embodiment, a returnable and refillable water container is provided having a full-length body sleeve of a PEN polymer. A multi-station injection molding apparatus is provided having a transfer mechanism, such as a rotatable turret or reciprocating shuttle, for cost-effective manufacture of preforms simultaneously in multiple cavity sets.

A polyester preform which is injection molded preferably of PET and wherein the preform is provided with a molded neck finish or neck portion including threads which are molded to a high tolerance and wherein the neck finish may receive a closure cap of the type having a tamper indicating band which engages over a retaining bead also molded to a high tolerance as part of the neck finish. In order to maintain the container which is blow molded from the preform in axial alignment with the neck finish and thus eliminate the perpendicularity problem, a ring of the preform immediately below the flange which functions as the capping ring, is heated to a high temperature and crystallized. In a like manner, the end sealing surface is also heated to a high temperature and crystallized. The remainder of the neck finish remains in its amorphous state without disturbing the configuration of either the threads or the retaining bead. This combination of crystallized portions with the remainder of the neck finish remaining amorphous assures a high quality connection between a closure cap, whether the closure cap is formed of plastic or metal, while providing the end sealing surface with a hard tough finish resisting deformation and at the same time reducing the closure cap removal torque.
