An object is to provide a lifting magnet that can secure a sufficient magnetic flux penetration depth during conveyance of steel plates, easily and highly precisely control the magnetic flux penetration depth in accordance with the number of steel plates to be lifted, achieve both a high level of performance of controlling the number of steel plates to be lifted during control operation and a high level of lifting stability during conveyance, and has a compact and lightweight device structure. A lifting magnet includes a plurality of electromagnetic coils 1 that are concentrically arranged and capable of being independently ON/OFF-controlled and voltage-controlled. By using the plurality of electromagnetic coils in a selective or appropriately combined manner, the lifting magnet can secure a sufficient magnetic flux penetration depth during conveyance of steel plates, and can easily and highly precisely control the magnetic flux penetration depth in accordance with the number of steel plates to be lifted.

The polar yoke of such an electromagnet (1) has two North polarity cores (3) on which two solenoids (4) are wound, protected on the bottom by annular baffles (5) made from non-magnetic material, and side panels (10) made from ferromagnetic material extend along both sides and pass next to the two cores (3) magnetically connecting the three South polarity poles, the side panels (10) being magnetically insulated from the two cores (3). The thickness of the side panels (10) is sized such that they are suitable to short-circuit the whole lateral flux preventing the dispersion thereof and conveying it completely towards the polar shoes (7) of the three poles and into the material to be magnetized thus actively contributing to the lifting of the latter.
