The aim of the invention is to reduce the damage to cellulosic material during the bleaching treatment of cellulosic material by using catalysts with bleaching activity, without significantly impacting the bleaching performance in the process. This was achieved largely by way of a method for bleaching cellulosic material in the presence of a peroxygen-containing bleaching agent and a bleach-boosting transition metal complex, which is carried out in the presence of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes. The spherical polyelectrolyte brushes preferably contain the transition metal complex in a colloidally bound manner.

It is intended to provide a process for producing bleached pulp in which unbleached pulp obtained by cooking a lignocellulose material is subjected to alkali/oxygen bleaching, treated with peroxomonosulfuric acid, and further a multi-stage chlorine-free bleaching treatment starting from a chlorine dioxide bleaching treatment is carried out; a process for producing bleached pulp in which the unbleached pulp is subjected to alkali/oxygen bleaching, and then subjected to a chlorine-free bleaching treatment or a totally chlorine-free bleaching treatment to bleach the pulp so as to have a whiteness of 70 to 89%, then the pulp is treated with peroxomonosulfuric acid; and paper produced at a papermaking pH of 6 or below using the bleached pulp obtained by such a production process. A process for efficiently producing bleached pulp in which the brown color is improved in the chlorine-free bleaching and the bleaching cost is reduced and paper produced in an acidic papermaking condition using the bleached pulp are provided.

A modified kraft pulp fiber with unique properties is provided. The modified fiber can be a modified bleached kraft fiber that is almost indistinguishable from its conventional counterpart, except that it has a low degree of polymerization (DP). Methods for making the modified fiber and products made from it are also provided. The method can be a one step acidic, iron catalyzed peroxide treatment process that can be incorporated into a single stage of a multi-stage bleaching process. The products can be chemical cellulose feedstocks, microcrystalline cellulose feedstocks, fluff pulps and products made from them.
