One embodiment utilizes nonuniform etching of chemically identical components of a ferrite slider material due solely to random crystal orientation relative to the exposed surface. Another embodiment utilizes a photoresist of a type used in making printed circuit boards, to form a pattern. Subsequently, the surface may be etched to form the anti-striction properties. A variety of controlled and reproducible patterns as well as a controlled depth of pattern may be utilized.

    摘要: A tape support which provides several different functions in a reel-to-reel tape drive is disclosed. The tape support provides means for sensing tension in the tape, buffers or decouples the tape at the magnetic head from any perturbations arising at the take-up reel, and reliably guides the tape along the tape path. the tape travels along an arcuate surface of the tape support (16) on an air bearing. A port (17) in the arcuate surface senses pressure between the tape and the arcuate surface. This pressure is communicated to a transducer (22) which provides an output representing the tension on the tape. Flanges (24) on the ends of the tape support provide guiding of the tape over the air bearing and also provide venting of the air bearing to prevent tape vibration. A purge line (28) expels a gaseous medium out of the sense port thereby keeping the sense port clear of contaminants.

A first end of the tape (20) is attached to the first tape reel (30) and a second end of the tape (20) is attached to the second tape reel (35). The first tape reel motor (40) applies a torque to the first tape reel (30) pulling the tape (20) in a first direction. The second tape reel motor (45) applies a torque to the second tape reel (35) pulling the tape (20) in an opposite direction. A tension is created in the tape (20) as the tape (20) is pulled in opposite directions.

The integral transducer/suspension assembly can be adapted for either flying above the recording media or for use in continuous contact with the recording media.
