The present invention discloses texturing of the slider air bearing surfaces (18a,18b) of the magnetic heads in disk drives to reduce striction that retards take-off and displaces critical lubricant in a magnetic head system. One embodiment utilizes nonuniform etching of chemically identical components of a ferrite slider material due solely to random crystal orientation relative to the exposed surface. Another embodiment utilizes a photoresist of a type used in making printed circuit boards, to form a pattern. Subsequently, the surface may be etched to form the anti-striction properties. A variety of controlled and reproducible patterns as well as a controlled depth of pattern may be utilized.

A tape support which provides several different functions in a reel-to-reel tape drive is disclosed. The tape support provides means for sensing tension in the tape, buffers or decouples the tape at the magnetic head from any perturbations arising at the take-up reel, and reliably guides the tape along the tape path. the tape travels along an arcuate surface of the tape support (16) on an air bearing. A port (17) in the arcuate surface senses pressure between the tape and the arcuate surface. This pressure is communicated to a transducer (22) which provides an output representing the tension on the tape. Flanges (24) on the ends of the tape support provide guiding of the tape over the air bearing and also provide venting of the air bearing to prevent tape vibration. A purge line (28) expels a gaseous medium out of the sense port thereby keeping the sense port clear of contaminants.

A system and method for controlling contact pressure and spacing between a tape (20) and a tape head (15) includes means for determining a tape speed of the tape (20) across the tape head (15) and means for controlling a tape tension of the tape (20) as a function of the tape speed. The function is either linear (100) or non-linear (105). However, a higher velocity will result in a higher tension and a lower velocity will result in a lower tension. The means for determining the tape speed is preferably a tape controller (25). The means for controlling the tape tension preferably includes first and second tape reels (30, 35) driven by first and second tape reel motors (40, 45). A first end of the tape (20) is attached to the first tape reel (30) and a second end of the tape (20) is attached to the second tape reel (35). The first tape reel motor (40) applies a torque to the first tape reel (30) pulling the tape (20) in a first direction. The second tape reel motor (45) applies a torque to the second tape reel (35) pulling the tape (20) in an opposite direction. A tension is created in the tape (20) as the tape (20) is pulled in opposite directions.

A magnetic transducer and suspension assembly suitable for use in both contact recording and in winchester-type applications is described. A generally rectangular elongated flat suspension member includes a vertical-type inductive read/write transducer formed integrally with the suspension member and is embedded in one end of the suspension member. The vertical inductive transducer is suitable for vertical recording applications. The transducer vertical magnetic pole tip and magnetic yoke structure are formed at one end of the suspension member with the vertical pole tip extending to and exposed at an air bearing surface formed on the lower surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member. The integral transducer/suspension assembly can be adapted for either flying above the recording media or for use in continuous contact with the recording media. The air bearing surface is formed on the lower surface of a wear pad. The fabrication of the transducer/suspension assembly is adapted to be performed at the wafer level.

Laser etching of a substrate (28) in a liquid (12) is accomplished by laser induced sonic cavitation at the substrate surface. The preferred substrate (28) is laser (22) energy absorbing and has a finite melting temperature. The preferred liquid (12) is an organic or inorganic inert liquid which does not chemically react with the substrate (28) at room temperature. The laser (22) is preferably a copper vapor laser but a chopped beam cw argon ion laser or a YAG laser adjusted to a low power output sufficient to avoid the formation of a recast layer can also be used. The laser (22) parameters are adjusted for causing the growth and collapse of bubbles at the substrate surface. The laser etching has particular application in the fabrication of rails (46) in magnetic head sliders and dicing of Al₂O₃-TiC, TiC, SiC, Si/SiO₂, and laser energy absorbing metal and metal oxides.
