The usual aluminium layer (26) may be applied to the screen layer (24). The optical interference filter stripes (22) may comprise short wave pass filters, band pass filters or a combination of both types. The short wave pass filter stripes may comprise modified quarter wavelength multi-layer dielectric filters and the bandpass filter may comprise a Fabry-Perot filter.

The cathode ray tube (1) has a film (4) composed chiefly of aluminum oxide which covers a carbon layer (3) of black matrix formed on the inner surface of a face plate (2). Phosphor layers (5R), (5G), (5B) are formed on the film (4). Therefore, the carbon layer, being very thin, does not burn white even in the step of baking. There is obtained a highly fine black matrix phosphor screen (6), making it possible to provide a very fine black matrix color cathode ray tube of good quality.

A faceplate arrangement for a monochromatic cathode ray tube includes a compound filter disposed between the faceplate and a light scattering luminescent screen. The compound fitter includes a multilayer interference edge filter adjacent the screen and a multilayer matching fitter adjacent the faceplate. The edge filter reflects back into the screen light rays received from the screen which would contribute to halo, and the matching filter matches the optical admittances of the edge filter and the faceplate.

A cathode ray tube phosphor has the composition x(ZnO)Y 2 Si0 7 , 1≧x≧0.42 doped with at least one emitting ion. The emitting ion may be Mn 4+ or Eu 3+ to give a red emission; Mn 2+ orTb 3+ to give a blue emission. The phosphor (5) is coated on the inner face plate of a cathode ray tube (1). The coating may have different areas coated with different emitting ion to give a colour television tube. The tube may be used as part of an aircraft head up display.
