The duty cycle is modulated with a modulation frequency which is substantially one-half the frequency of the second longitudinal acoustic mode of the HID lamp. In operation, exciting the second longitudinal acoustic mode of the HID lamp with the half bridge configured resonant inverter operated with a modulated duty cycle achieves color mixing along a vertical axis of the HID lamp.

The method also sweeps the switching frequency in a high frequency range of such resonant inverter. The duty cycle modulation effectuates power modulation to create a fixed frequency power component which is substantially equal to the frequency of the second longitudinal acoustic mode. The sweeping switching frequency of the half bridge configured resonant inverter drives the HID lamp in a manner which effectuates arc stability and arc straightening.

A circuit for detecting arc instabilities in a high pressure gas discharge lamp. The circuit has rectifier means and a low pass filter to obtain from the lamp voltage a quasi-rms voltage having recurrent periods with first zones containing spurious noise from switching of inverter switches and broad second zones, between the first zones, which are substantially free of spurious noise. The quasi-rms voltage is sampled only during the second zones, so that the samples have a high information-to-noise ratio. The sample signal may be used in a variety of methods to detect and control arc instabilities in gas discharge lamps.

A high power factor electronic ballast for a gas discharge lamp is disclosed which can provide bus voltage control in response to varying load conditions without the need for direct sensing of the load conditions. The electronic ballast includes an input stage; an output stage; a slow loop controller configured to regulate the bus voltage to a constant value during steady state operation; a hysteresis band over voltage protection (OVP) controller for maintaining the bus voltage in a predetermined hysteresis voltage band during open circuit and pre-ignition conditions; and an on-time limiting controller for guaranteeing a minimum on-time for the input stage. The electronic ballast further includes at least one DC bus capacitor for storing energy created from energy imbalances between the input and output stage. The novel construction makes it possible to regulate the bus voltage to a constant value under steady state conditions using the slow loop controller, and to prevent the bus voltage from increasing in an uncontrolled manner under open circuit and pre-ignition conditions using the over voltage protection controller. This is advantageously achieved without having to directly sense the load condition.

The system comprises one or more filter/photo diode sensors for sensing a first set of tri-stimulus values (30a) of the light output (11) and providing signals (CS1-CS3) indicative thereof. The signals are utilized in a transformation matrix (32) whereby a second set of tri-stimulus values (30a) is obtained.
