The present invention relates to a method of optimizing the electrical consumption of a residential gateway comprising at least one FXS port to which an analogue telephone is connected via a line, said FXS port being configured on the basis of a pair of polarizing points, termed default points, which defines characteristics of maximum voltage and maximum current of the line which are predetermined so as to ensure the proper operation of the telephone in on-hook or off-hook mode regardless of the type of this telephone. The method is characterized in that it comprises the following steps: - storing (1) at least one other pair of polarizing points, termed economical points, which defines characteristics of maximum voltage and maximum current of the line which are lower than those defined by the pair of default polarizing points, - selecting (2) a pair of polarizing points from among the pair of default polarizing points and said at least one pair of economical polarizing points according to the result of a comparative test for comparing all these pairs of polarizing points, and - configuring (3) the FXS port on the basis of the pair of polarizing points thus selected.
