A method for initiating fingerprint capture in an electronic device is described. The device includes a touch screen with a sensing region, a touch controller, a fingerprint controller, and a host. The device is placed in a low power doze mode where the fingerprint controller is in a low power state and the device scans for an object proximate to the sensing region. When an object is proximate to the sensing region, the device executes a validation mode to determine whether the object is a fingerprint. When a fingerprint is detected, the device sends a wake up signal to the fingerprint controller and places the fingerprint controller in a high power mode. One or more fingerprint images are then captured.

The method includes: sending, by a fingerprint sensor, a first notification to a control chip and concurrently sending a second notification to a display driver chip of a screen when detecting that a finger presses or touches a fingerprint recognition area; completing, by the display driver chip according to the second notification, preparation work before the screen is turned on; verifying, by the control chip according to the first notification, fingerprint information collected by the fingerprint sensor and prestored fingerprint information; and if the verification succeeds, unlocking the screen and turning on the screen. By means of the method, a time it takes to unlock the screen by using a fingerprint can be shortened, and fingerprint unlock experience of a user can be improved.

Technology is presented for providing feedback to a user on an ability of an executing application to track user action for control of the executing application on a computer system. A capture system detects a user in a capture area. Factors in the capture area and the user's actions can adversely affect the ability of the application to determine if a user movement is a gesture which is a control or instruction to the application. One example of such factors is a user being out of the field of view of the capture system. Some other factor examples include lighting conditions and obstructions in the capture area. Responsive to a user tracking criteria not being satisfied, feedback is output to the user. In some embodiments, the feedback is provided within the context of an executing application.
