    摘要: The specification discloses a method for making DCPD based resins that have relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The method comprises thermally polymerizing dicyclopentadiene monomer in the presence of one or more strong acids, preferably with an olefinic modifier, to provide a dicyclopentadiene oligomer. Optionally, an organic sulfur species can also be used to further effect molecular weight control. For end-use performance in inks, adhesives, coatings and other related areas, the invention provides dicyclopentadiene oligomer resins having weight average molecular weights less than 1000 and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions, as measured by a polydispersity index, of less than about 2.3. Among the strong acids that are effective for controlling molecular weight, hypophosphorous acid is preferred because it gives light colored resins.

    摘要: Rosin esters that are both light-colored and color stable may be produced by reacting rosin with an organic compound containing two or more hydroxyl groups each separated from each other by at least four carbon atoms. With appropriate choices for the esterification catalyst and antioxidant(s), the rosin ester may be useful as a tackifier, and can be formulated into an adhesive composition. The adhesive compositions will further comprise an appropriate adhesive polymer.

    摘要: Light-colored phenolic-modified rosin esters, suitable for use as, for example, tackifiers in adhesive compositions, are provided. The resins may be prepared by reacting together rosin, a phenolic compound, formaldehyde or a reactive equivalent thereof, and a non-phenolic hydroxyl-containing organic compound in the presence of at least one lightening agent selected from phenol sulfide compounds, phosphorous acid, esters of phosphorous acid, and hypophosphite salts. The formaldehyde or reactive equivalent is present in an amount ranging from about 1.1 to about 3.5 equivalents of -CHO moieties per 1 equivalent of Ar-OH moiety of the phenolic compound, in order to obtain rosin esters having desirably low color, and adequately low molecular weight to effectively function as tackifiers.

    摘要: The specification discloses a method for making low softening point modified terpene-phenol resins having improved properties. In the process, phenol is reacted in an organic solvent containing a Lewis acid catalyst with an acyclic mono-unsaturated olefin and terpene under reaction conditions sufficient to produce an alkyl-modified terpene-phenol resin at a relatively high yield having a softening point in the range of from about 70° to about 110°C, a Gardner color below about 6 and a polydispersity index below about 1.5. Due to its relatively low Gardner color number, the resin may be used substantially as produced avoiding additional decoloration steps which result in reduced product yield and increased cost. The product contains less volatile components and has improved compatibility with A-B and A-B-A copolymers as compared with many conventional modified terpene-phenol resins.

The elastomeric composition comprises an elastomeric matrix containing from about 1 to about 40 wt.% silica and from about 0.1 to about 20 wt.% of an additive selected from the group consisting of rosin acid or fatty acid monoesters of glycerol and block copolymers having at least one A-block derived from the group consisting of rosin acids and fatty acids and a B-block having a number average molecular weight in the range of from about 200 to about 2500 daltons derived from the group consisting of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) polyol. The additive provides substantial improvement in the dispersion and adhesion of silica in the elastomeric matrix which substantially improves the strength and other properties of the material.
