This notch is designed to engage the yarn (11) and raise it as the sliders (1) are lifted by the slider lifting pickers upon removal from knitting of the associated needles (9). The sliders (1) may be lifted to a position such that the notch (10) is brought above the hook (7) of the respective sinkers (6) which, accordingly, cannot engage with the yarn during the withdrawal phase. Thus, the bluff sinkers and related ears on the sliders for lifting the bluff sinkers can be eliminated, and the machine made simpler and less expensive to build, as well as less liable to give trouble from breakage of the ears and bluff sinkers.

In a circular knitting machine of the type having two needle beds or needle-carrying structures (1,8) for knitting plain and purl stitches, the lower needle-carrying structure (1) comprises a cylinder and the upper needle-carrying structure (8) has a substantially bell-like shape and needle tricks (11) of arcuate shape for correspondingly arcuately bent needles (13). The arcuately bent needles (13) are controlled by selecting jacks (12), in turn controlled by cams (18) arranged around the substantially bell-like structure (8). Such a machine can have the same number of needles (3,13) on both needle-carrying structures (1,8), and accordingly, a higher fineness for a given diameter than traditional cylinder and dial machines. It also enables knitting loops to be transferred between all of the needles (3,13) in the two structures (1,8), ' both from the purl stitch side to the plain and from the plain stitch side to the purl, thus enabling the knitting of various types of rib pattern, such as 1:1, 2:2, etc., without requiring any jack replacement.

The invention provides a circular knitting machine, in particular a single or double cylinder hose knitting machine, wherein various operations, such as the advancement of the main drum (2), speed changing, needle selection, movement of the stitch-adjusting unit (3), etc. are controlled by an electronic programming unit instead of the traditional main chain. The electronic programming unit programmingly controls a series of electro-mechanical transducers, preferably solenoid valves and pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders (12, 23), which determine the required movements of the machine operational members (2, 3). The programming unit is operative at each revolution of the machine to receive drive pulses from a revolution transducer. A considerable constructional simplification and adaptability of the machine to different knitting programs is thus achieved.
