An electrolytic electrode substrate comprises an electrically conductive substrate and, formed on the surface of the electrically conductive substrate, an oxide layer having a thickness of from 10 to 200 µm, wherein the oxide in the oxide layer comprises a non-stoichiometric composition containing oxygen and at least one metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, tantalum, and niobium. An advantage of the electrode substrate is that it is stable when used in electrolytic processes involving a reversal of current flow. Further, the electrode substrate is stable in the presence of corrosive substances such as a fluorine.

Electrode structures of solid polymer electrolyte type for use in electrolysis are disclosed, (i) in which an adhering layer containing fine particles loaded with a β-lead dioxide powder is formed on one surface of an ion-exchange membrane serving as a solid polymer electrolyte, and an electrodeposited layer of lead dioxide being formed on the surface of the adhering layer, and (ii) in which an electrodeposited layer of lead dioxide having dispersed therein fine particles loaded with a β-lead dioxide powder is formed electrolytically between an ion-exchange membrane serving as a solid polymer electrolyte and a current collector positioned close to the ion-exchange membrane, to thereby form a unitary assembly. The present electrode structures are useful for production of ozone by electrolysis of water and for production of peroxides by electrolysis of aqueous solutions.

A calcium phosphate-coated composite material is disclosed, comprising a metallic substrate, an oxide layer on the metallic substrate, said oxide layer consisting essentially of the oxide of one or more metals selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, tin, cobalt, aluminum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, and a coating layer of calcium phosphate provided on the oxide layer. A process for production of the calcium phosphate-coated composite material is also disclosed.

A lead oxide-coated electrode for use in electrolysis is disclosed, which comprises a primary layer comprising platinum and/or palladium oxide, an intermediate layer comprising α-PbO₂, and a coating layer comprising β-PbO₂ successively coated on a substrate comprising a corrosion resistant metal. The electrode has a strong and durable lead oxide coating firmly bonde d to the substrate, does not suffer from passivation, resistance increase, etc. and can be used stably for a long time at high current density. A process for producing the electrode is also disclosed.
