A printing machine comprises a charging device (10) that forms a variable operating voltage. A charging device pre-fault status condition is determined by sampling (11) the charging device (10) operating voltage, forming a slope value based on a charging device operating voltage rate of change per unit time, and determining when the slope value falls in a charging device pre-fault status range of values (200). When the pre-fault status determination is made, a message (110, 120, 130) is formed based on a current print count value (21). This message is then sent to a user or operator (1). When the print count value falls in a charging device replacement range of values, a replacement message is sent to inform that the charging device (10) needs to be replaced. Otherwise, when the print count value (21) does not fall in this range of values, a cleaning message is sent to inform that the charging device (10) needs to be cleaned.

AC biased electrodes (46) positioned in close proximity to a magnetic brush structure (56) carrying a two-component developer to cause a cloud of toner to be generated which noninteractively develops an electrostatic image. The two-component developer includes a mixture of carrier beads and toner particles. By making the two-component developer magnetically tractable, the developer is transported to the development zone as in conventional magnetic brush development where the development roll or shell of the magnetic brush structure rotates about stationary magnets positioned inside the shell.

Apparatus for electrostatically charging insulating toner particles in which the particles (17) are constrained particles to a region (16) between two surfaces (12, 18) which are arranged so as to be in close proximity to one another in a charging zone (34), and which are both arranged for movement through the charging zone. One of the surfaces is a charging surface (12) for charging the particles, and the other surface is a transporting surface (18) for transporting the particles through the charging zone. The surfaces are electrically biased (30, 32) to predetermined potentials. In one embodiment of the apparatus, the charging surface is the surface of the roller (12) which simultaneously meters and charges non-magnetic insulating toner particles, the roller having thereon a triboelectrically active coating (13). The transporting surface is in the form of an endless belt (18) which forms a path of movement around a drive roller (20) and an idler roller (22). The apparatus also includes a toner supply reservoir (16), containing therein weakly charged insulating toner particles (16) possessing about an equal number of positive and negative charges thereon, a voltage source (30) for the metering/charging roller, a voltage source (32) for the drive roller and the belt and a tensioning means (24) for the belt. The metering/charging roller (12) moves in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the transport belt (18). The apparatus and process of the present invention are useful, for example, in electrostatographic imaging apparatuses.

An apparatus and process for electrostatically charging insulating toner particles (24) to either a positive or negative polarity, and an etectrostatographic imaging system containing such apparatus. The apparatus includes a transporting surface (12) and a charging surface (16) which are arranged so as to be in close proximity to one another in a charging zone (19), the transporting surface (12) being arranged to transport the particles through the charging zone (19) in contract with the charging surface (16), and said surfaces being electrically biased (20,18) to predetermined potentials. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a roller (12) containing a coating (13) thereon, a toner supply (14) containing therein uncharged insulating toner particles (24), a charge injecting means (16), a voltage source (18) for said charge injecting means, and a voltage source (20) for said roller, wherein charges are injected from said charge injecting means into the uncharged insulating toner particles deposited on said roller, said injection being accomplished in a charging zone (19) encompassed by said roller and said charge injecting means.
