A round baler is disclosed for forming crop material into cylindrical bales. The baler has a main frame (11), a pair of side walls, a crop pick-up (16) mounted on the main frame, and a tailgate (14) pivotally connected to the main frame. The tailgate is operative between a closed position during which a bale is being formed in an expandable chamber, and an open position during which a formed bale is being discharged from the chamber. A sledge assembly (20), pivotally mounted on the main frame (11) for movement between a bale starting position and a full bale position, has crop engaging transverse rolls (21-23) for urging the crop material along a spiral path in the chamber for starting and forming a bale. An apron (32) is supported along a continuous path on the main frame (11) and tailgate (14) by a plurality of rotatable guide members (33-36, 38, 40). The path has an inner course (c) that cooperates with the sledge rolls (21-23) on the sledge assembly (20) to define the chamber. A take-up assembly (41, 43, 44), affixed to the sledge assembly, moves therewith between the bale starting position and full bale position. Structural twisting during uneven loading of the bale chamber is countered by a hydraulic cylinder (50) affixed between the main frame (11) and the sledge assembly (20).

A severing actuator moves the moveable severing member (5) from the intermediate position into a web severing position, thereby severing the web (30).

Above the lower roller is an upper roller both of which include auger fighting on outward sides thereof, which can overlap with the inlet. In use the contra-rotating flightings, by cooperation with a retainer plate, urge material carried from outside edges of the pick up unit toward the baler inlet which is generally narrower than the pick up unit. Gripping ribs provide a compressive in-feed function when large volumes of material are to be processed.
