The check valve piece is resiliently supported to abut a seal fitted to the insert. In one assembly, a pair of resiliently biased latch arms restrain the insert to the base. Fluid pumped into the conduit (3) in the direction of the arrow causes the ball (1) to lift from its seating (4) and to force the piston (6) along the conduit (3) against the biasing force of the spring (5), permitting fluid flow through the valve assembly. When the fluid pressure subsides, the biasing force of the spring (5) causes the ball valve (1) and the piston (6) to return to the closed position.
