The structure includes probes (34, 36) extended through the back wall (32) of a cavity (28) with associated transmission members (50, 52) and an associated isolation member (54). The teachings of the invention are extended to structures having the probes extended through the side wall (100) of a cavity. The teachings of the invention are further extended to dual band feed structures (124, 220 and 320). The structures are particularly suited to enhance high signal to noise ratios because of short path lengths to external receiver circuits and to enable realization in simple economical one piece castings.

A horn radiator assembly (10) includes two horn radiators (12, 14) each of which is formed as a conical horn and a waveguide of constant cross section connected to the small end of the horn as a feed and providing a signal port. The first of the horn radiators (12) is of relatively large cross section and serves to radiate electromagnetic waves at a relatively low frequency. The second of the horn radiators (14) is of relatively small cross section and serves to radiate electromagnetic waves at a relatively high frequency. The second radiator (14) is nested within the first radiator (12), and is positioned with its radiating aperture (28) coplanar with the radiating aperture (20) of the first radiator (12). In the second radiator (14), the waveguide feed (26) is provided with a bend (36) allowing the waveguide feed to pass through a wall (32) of the first radiator (12). A strut (34) may be affixed to the bend (36) to provide a symmetrical transverse support within the first radiator for the second radiator. A doubly-tapered electrically conductive sheet (48) extends from an apex within the throat (18) of the first radiator horn (12) to the transverse support, and from there tapers back to contact the horn of the second radiator (14). The tapered sheet (48) guides low-frequency radiation past the strut (34) and the bend (36) to minimize standing wave ratio.

Disclosed herein is a double-reflector antenna (1) for use on board a satellite or space platform for data downlink or for telemetry, tracking and command. Said double-reflector antenna (1) comprises a main reflector (11) and a sub- reflector (12) arranged coaxially with, and in front of, one another. Additionally, the double-reflector antenna (1) further comprises a coaxial feeder, that is arranged coaxially with the main reflector (11) and the sub-reflector (12), and that includes inner ( 14 ) and outer (13) conductors arranged coaxially with, and spaced apart from, one another. The coaxial feeder is designed to be fed with downlink microwave signals to be transmitted by the double- reflector antenna (1), and to radiate said downlink microwave signals through a feed aperture (15), that is located centrally with respect to the main reflector (11) and that gives onto the sub-reflector (12). The inner conductor (14) protrudes axially and outwardly from the feed aperture (15) up to the sub-reflector (12) and is rigidly coupled to said sub-reflector (12) thereby supporting said sub-reflector (12).

A dual band, higher and lower frequency range transducer with a circular coaxial waveguide feed is described having a first junction for connection of a lower frequency range outer waveguide of the coaxial waveguide feed to at least two rectangular or ridge waveguides offset from the longitudinal axis of the transducer and a second junction for connection of the at least two rectangular or ridge waveguides to a further waveguide. A third junction is provided for connecting an inner waveguide of the coaxial waveguide feed to a higher frequency range waveguide. The transducer comprises at least first and second parts joined across a first plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and including at least a portion of the higher frequency range waveguide extending within the first plane of the join. A seal such as an 'O' ring seal may be placed easily in the plane of the join thus preventing moisture ingress. Similarly, a feed horn and input and output ports may be sealingly attached to the first and second parts of the transducer. The first and second junctions are preferably impedance matched turnstile junctions.

The antenna includes a coupling portion to permit coupling to a communication device. An inner portion is coupled to the coupling portion, and includes a first choke having a depth which extends substantially parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the antenna and a width which extends in a radial direction of the antenna. The depth and the width of the first choke are set so that the first choke will operate at the first frequency. An outer portion is coupled to the inner portion, wherein the outer portion has a maximum diameter in the radial direction which is greater than the maximum diameter in the radial direction of the inner portion. The outer portion includes a second choke which also has a depth to extend substantially parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the antenna, and a width which extends in the radial direction. The depth and the width of the second choke are greater than the depth and the width of the first choke, and are set so that the second choke will operate at the second frequency.
