A multi-frequency antenna feed for incorporation into a single unit which combines at least two waveguides to provide simultaneous reception and/or transmission of signals in at least two separate frequency bands is described.This is achieved by creating a waveguide system of at least two waveguides sharing the same central axis; a central conventional waveguide which also acts as a center conductor for an outer coaxial waveguide and feeding the outer coaxial waveguide from a non-circular side feed, orthogonal to the waveguide axis, to set up a uniform field in the outer coaxial waveguide. The feeds are adjusted so that the phase center for each frequency band is at the same point in the feed for the same dish. Various embodiments of the invention are described.

Monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology is advantageously used to fabricate microwave circuitry for an antenna-converter system to enable an antenna (102) and its associated converter circuits (109) to be integrated together into a unitary package (100). Small reliable radio frequency (RF) circuits, polarization switch matrix circuits, intermediate frequency (IF) circuits and power and control circuits for the converter are manufactured and integrated onto a plurality of small area microwave circuit disks (120-121) using MIC/MMIC technology. The plurality of converter circuit disks are sandwiched together and directly mounted flat against the back of the antenna to form a unitary package. The disks for the converter circuits are further sized such that the circuit disks fit within an envelope volume defined by the size and shape of the antenna.

A dual frequency feed assembly employing a pair of coaxial circular wave guide cavities, each with respective probe. The higher frequency cavity, e.g. Ku band, is located within the lower frequency, e.g. C band cavity. A common motor is used to drive the two probes which have a common axis A. The lower frequency probe is coupled through the rear wall of the assembly to a rectangular waveguide. The higher frequency probe is also coupled through the rear wall of the assembly but via a coaxial line which is diverted from the axis A to exit beside the lower frequency waveguide. The two rectangular waveguides and the drive motor for the probes are all mounted on the rear of the assembly. In one embodiment of the invention the coaxial line extends from its probe to a housing on the body containing a signal processing circuit board. Connection to that board is made directly eliminating the need for any waveguide transmission line. In other embodiments of the invention, electronic switches, for example, ferrite switches are used in place of rotating probes. The probes may then be fixed and their coaxial lines fixed as well.
