The present invention has an object to find a biocompatible material that has excellent film formation properties and resistance to water dissolution, and can be easily applied on various bases as a coating, while having excellent antithrombotic properties, and to provide an antithrombotic coating agent and an antithrombotic coating film produced by using the biocompatible material, and a medical device provided with the antithrombotic coating film. Means for achieving the object are a copolymer containing at least one repeating unit (A) represented by formula (1) (wherein, n represents an integer of 2 to 10 and R 1 represents a methyl group or an ethyl group), and at least one repeating unit (B) represented by formula (2) (wherein R 2 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group); an antithrombotic coating agent containing the copolymer and an organic solvent; an antithrombotic coating film formed of the copolymer; and a medical device provided with the coating film.

Process for the preparation of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether, comprising the steps of supplying maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether and an initiator, together forming a feed flow, through an inlet to a reactor wherein maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether react to a copolymer of maleic anhydride an alkyl vinyl ether thereby forming a reaction mixture with the maleic anhydride, the alkyl vinyl ether and the initiator characterized in that the process is a continuous process and the reactor is a loop reactor wherein the reaction mixture is internally circulated, whereby this reaction mixture arrives at the inlet before the maleic anhydride and alkyl vinyl ether have completely reacted while a remainder of initiator is still present. The invention further relates to copolymer of maleic anhydride and alkyl vinyl ether, including hydrolyzed or alcoholized copolymers, characterized in that a molecular weight distribution, expressed as Mw/Mn, is less than 2. The invention also relates to an apparatus for conducting the process of the invention.

What is described herein is a process for making a copolymer of high specific viscosity by polymerisation of maleic anhydride and a C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether monomer. The invention involves polymerizing said monomers to form a slurry of said copolymer in excess alkyl vinyl ether as solvent and toluene or an aliphatic organic compound as cosolvent, and is characterized by the steps of: (a) precharging a reactor with C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether as solvent at a reaction temperature, (b) feeding a mixture of maleic anhydride and a C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether in substantially stoichiometric amounts, preferably with a slight excess of the alkyl vinyl ether, and at a selected rate, into said precharged reactor, and (c) simultaneously feeding a predetermined mixture of toluene or an aliphatic organic compound and a polymerization initiator continuously over substantially the entire period of polymerization.

An improved process for the preparation of an alkyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer in which copolymerization is carried out in an admixture of an ester and an hydrocarbon. The alkyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer obtained by this process does not contain any harmful aromatic solvent such as benzene, etc. In addition, the alkyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer has a higher apparent bulk density than can be obtained in prior processes.
