A high strength, high modulus pitch-based carbon fiber has a crystalline structure in which the presence of the (112) cross-lattice line and the resolution of the diffraction band into the (100) and (101) diffraction lines, which indicate the three-dimensional order of the crystallite of the fiber, are not recognized, and in which the orientation angle (φ) of X-ray structural parameter is not greater than 12° and the stack height (Lc) ranges between 80 and 180°Å. The carbon fiber also has a single-fiber diameter of 5 to 12µm, tensile strength not lower than 3.0 GPa, tensile elastic modulus not smaller than 500 GPa and elongation not smaller than 0.5%.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Kohlenstoffaser-Vorprodukts aus Steinkohlenteerpech, wobei die Abtrennung der unerwünschten Bestandteile des Ausgangspechs ebenso wie die Abtrennung des isotropen Materials aus dem durch thermische Behandlung erzeugten Mesophasen-Pechs mit Hilfe überkritischer Gase unter Verwendung geeigneter Schleppmittel erfolgt. Das so erhaltene Vorprodukt besteht zu mindestens 80 % aus Mesophasensphärulen, die leicht plastisch verformt und damit zu Fäden versponnen werden können.

Pour fabriquer des pièces tubulaires tissées, on réalise en un seul tissage un tissu tubulaire sans couture formé au moins en partie de fibres carbonisables, et on chauffe ce tissu jusqu'à la transformation de ces fibres en fibres de carbone, de façon à obtenir un retrait des fibres, s'accompagnant d'un accroissement de leur densité dans le tissu. En utilisant des pièces de forme appropriées, ce retrait permet une mise en forme et/ou à dimension de la pièce réalisée.

A method for fibrillating carbonaceous fibers, which comprises contacting a tow of carbonaceous fibers to rotating surfaces of rollers for fibrillation, wherein at least two rollers are disposed so that the center axes of the rollers intersect the direction of advance of the tow of carbonaceous fibers and the rotating surfaces of the rollers are substantially alternately inclined in opposite directions, thereby to exert a shearing force to the tow in a direction transverse to the direction of advance of the tow.
