The invention relates to a flame-retardant thermoplastic material, comprising thermoplastic base resin, a flame retardant, and an optional antioxidant, wherein the flame retardant comprises a complex of phosphine oxide and a transition metal salt. The invention also relates to flame-retardant thermoplastic expanded beads. A foam molding prepared from the flame-retardant thermoplastic expanded beads has good flame-retardant and antistatic properties, has excellent mechanical properties and is widely used.

Further, carbon fiber having cross section high order structure such that the central portion is radial type structure and the surface layer portion is random radial type structure is used as anode material for improved non-aqueous electrolyte Li-ion secondary battery.

In a process for producing carbon fibres from coal tar pitch, the coal tar pitch is filtered before being spun and the pitch filtrate is distilled in a thin-film evaporator in order to increase its softening point over 260° C. A pure and homogeneous hard pitch is thus obtained, without the re-formation of infusable, chinolin-insoluble components. The most difficult and cost intensive step of the fibre production process, namely the thermal aftertreatment of the spun pitch fibres, can thus be easily and quickly carried out. The subsequent thermal treatment is carried out in a cyclic treatment installation.

Disclosed are improved pitch-based activated carbon fibers containing an oxygen content of about 3% by weight or more based on the whole weight of the pitch-based activated carbon fibers, and process for preparing the same by bringing them in contract with an ozone-containing atmosphere, a hydrogen-peroxide solution or nitric acid. The improved pitch-based activated carbon fibers have an excellent adsorptive capacity.

A carbonaceous pitch can be produced by thermal cracking and polycondensation to have a softening point of 230-320°C; preferably it is fractionated to give an optically anisotropic pitch, which is spun from nozzles in an inert gas atmosphere to form fibres which are taken up on a bobbin. A spinning treatment oil is applied, the fiber bundles are doubled, e.g. by rewinding, a non-aqueous heat-resistant treatment oil is applied (e.g. an alkyl phenyl polysiloxane of viscosity 10-1000 cst or dimethyl polysiloxane of viscosity 5-1000 cst, containing an antioxidant) in amount of 0.01-10 wt%, the bundles are passed continuously into an oxygen-rich gas of 30% or more O₂ content in a furnace at not above 350° (300-330°C); the atmosphere being preferably continuously stirred and exchanged, so as to infusibilize the fibres and finally the fibres are heated in inert gas to 500-1000°C to precarbonise and then to 1000-2000°C to form carbon fibres or 2000-3000° to form graphite fibres. The carbon or graphite fibres formed have a good appearance, high elasticity and strength and little fluff, and the process is rapid and continuous.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a carbon fiber chopped strand which comprises preparing a pitch fiber from petroleum pitch or coal pitch, cutting the pitch fiber to a predetermined desired length, heating the cut pitch fiber at a high density accumulation in the atmosphere of an oxidative gas to infusibilize the cut pitch fiber, and then carbonizing and graphitizing the infusibilized fiber in an inert atmosphere. According to the process of the invention, no fuzz are formed on the fiber and no uneven infusibilization takes place. Further, the pitch fiber chopped strand accumulation has a high bulk density and relieve exothermic excursion naturally, and therefore neither combustion nor sticking takes place even in an oxidative atmosphere. Accordingly, the production speed can be enhanced and the cost can be lowered to a great extent.
