An apparatus for tribocharging particles of electrically insulating materials has a rotatable drum (1), made of a metallic material, for containing the particles. The drum has an inlet (11), for charging material, and an outlet (13), for discharging material. The drum further has means (7) for rotating the drum about an axis of rotation, the orientation of the axis of rotation being such that, in operation of the apparatus, the particles tumble against each other and against the walls of the vessel, thereby becoming tribocharged. A fines removal mesh screening means (10) is attached to an outer surface of the drum, allowing fines to escape from the drum. An electrostatic separation tower (20), having tapering walls and at least one pair of electrodes (24) arranged on opposite walls of the tower, is aligned to receive discharged material from the drum. The tower separates the particles, falling from the drum into the tower (20), in an electric field generated between the electrodes (24).

This invention relates to an apparatus and method for electrostatically separating particles having different electrostatic properties. The apparatus involves two thin box-shaped electrodes facing each other as mirror-images and charged with a voltage field causing the opposing electrodes to assume opposite charges, and then passing a mixture of particles through the field so as to make the particles travel toward the respective electrodes through a perforated plate or screen and to a solid back plate and then to fall by gravity through a splitter ajusted to separate particles attracted by one charge from particles attracted by another charge. A vibrator is attached to each electrode, which is isolated for movement by spaced vibration isolator to shake off any particles stuck to the electrodes.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren sowie eine Vorrichtung zum Trennen eines Bruchgutes, bestehend aus gebrochenen Körnern oder Bohnen und ihren Schalen, insbesondere zur Trennung von Kakaobruch (Nibs) von Kakaobohnenschalen, wobei die Trennung elektrostatisch erfolgt, indem das Bruchgut in franktionierter Form in einer Aufladungszone (1) zwischen zwei unterschiedlich geladenen Elektroden (7,8) elektrisch aufgeladen, anschließend im frein Fall in einem von zwei anderen, die Freifallstrecke begrenzenden Elektroden (9,10) erzeugten homogenen elektrischen Feld entladen und danach mittels eines mechanischen Separators (12) in zwei getrennten Produktströmen, bestehend im wesentlichen aus einem Kernbruchstrom und einem Schalenstrom, weggefördert wird. Durch unterschiedlich starke Ablenkung der Bruchgutteilchen in der Ablenkzone wird der Kernbruch von den Schalen getrennt, wodurch mit einem relativ geringen apparatetechnischen Aufwand Trennergebnisse erzielbar sind, die bisher nur mit Hilfe von Sieb- und Windsichtvorrichtungen und damit kostspieligeren Apparaten erreicht wurden.

A method and apparatus for separation of carbonaceous particles from fly ash utilises an electrostatic separator having a plurality of separation zones (11) arranged to define a downward serpentine pathway for particulate material, the separation zones (11) comprising spaced parallel planar electrodes (8, 8a, 9, 9a) with collectors (13) positioned at the outlet of each separation zone to direct the respective carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous particles to respective storage hoppers. The feedstock is introduced to the apparatus via a rotary valve at a temperature of about 100 DEG C and the potential difference between respective pairs of electrodes is about 30KV.
