A pen tip (81) capable of ejecting the thermochromic ink (83) is provided at a front end of the writing body (8), and a friction portion (4), having a low abrasion property, capable of thermally changing color of the handwriting of the thermochromic ink (83) by the frictional heat generated when the handwriting is rubbed with the friction portion (4) is provided on the outer surface of the barrel (2). The writing body (8) is accommodated in the barrel (2) so as to be capable of moving in a longitudinal direction, and the thermochromic writing instrument further comprises an operation portion (5) provided on the outer surface of the barrel (2) so as to project radially outward from a side wall of the barrel (2). The pen tip (81) of the writing body (8) is adapted to project from / retract into a front-end hole (31) of the barrel (2) by operating the operation portion (5). The thermochromic writing instrument further comprises a side slide type projection/retraction mechanism which shifts the pen tip (81) from the pen-tip-retracted state to the pen-tip-projected state by a forward press operation of the operation portion (5). The friction portion (4) is provided at the front end of the barrel (2), whereby the friction portion (4) and the operation portion (5) are disposed independently of each other on the outer surface of the barrel (2).
