A damper (36) for use in a hydraulic actuator system between a master cylinder (10) and a slave cylinder (12) of the system. The damper includes a housing (44), an elastomeric diaphragm (46) and a spring steel diaphragm (48). The upper face (46c) of the elastomeric diaphragm (46) is in fluid communication with hydraulic fluid in the system via a port (52c) so that the elastomeric diaphragm may deflect in response to low frequency vibrations transmitted through hydraulic fluid in the system to effect damping of the low frequency vibrations. The spring steel diaphragm (48) is positioned in the system generally parallel to and proximate the lower face (46d) of the elastomeric diaphragm (46) so as to form a back up for the elastomeric diaphragm so that the elastomeric diaphragm may deform against the spring steel diaphragm in response to intermediate frequency vibrations transmitted through the hydraulic fluid to cause deflection of the spring steel diaphragm to effect damping of the intermediate frequency vibrations. A thin annular sidewall (52a) of the damper housing (44) coacts with the upper face (46c) of the elastomeric diaphragm (46) which provides further high frequency system damping by virtue of vibratory volumetric expansion of the thin housing sidewall (52a).

The bladder surge tank (10) can be horizontally or vertically oriented. In a horizontal embodiment, the surge tank (10) includes a nozzle system (11) disposed horizontally therein that is separate from the liquid port (15) and that is integrally joined to the interior wall. Such nozzle system (11) includes a nozzle member (12) positioned between the liquid port (15) and the bladder (13), and comprises a plurality of perforations (31) disposed therethrough. In a vertical embodiment, the surge tank (10) includes a nozzle system (11) disposed vertically therein that is part of the liquid port (15) and that includes a nozzle member (12) having a plurality of perforations (31) disposed therethrough. In both embodiment, the perforations (31) define a total area that is greater than a total area of the liquid port (15), and the perforations (31) are distributed throughout the nozzle member (12) such that liquid entering the tank body (10) through the liquid port (15) is dispersed uniformly into the tank body (10).

The resilient member (60) can be a flexible diaphragm or a spring-mounted plate or any compressible material, and may be placed adjacent to a fluid cushion (70) that further dissipates the vibration energy. The resilient member (60) is placed within a hydraulic fluid line (30) leading from a fluid storage tank (40) to the hydraulic fluid pump (20). The apparatus may be used in a method for reducing vibration and noise in an injection molding machine (10), or in any other device where noise is generated by a hydraulic pump having suction lines that transmit noise to an oil supply tank.

The second chamber includes a radial shoulder (76) that maximizes an effective area of the diaphragm. A spacer (80) is disposed in the second chamber that engages the diaphragm to prevent the diaphragm from contacting the radial shoulder. The spacer maintains the diaphragm in a position to provide the maximum effective area of the diaphragm.
