A multicolour electroluminescent display device uses a layer (22) of material, e.g. ZnS:Mn, of which the brightness/ voltage characteristic exhibits hysteresis, and a second layer (18) of material, e.g. ZnS:Cu,Al, without hysteresis and with a different emission spectrum. An alternating voltage is applied across the layers and, initially, is divided such that the voltage across each layer is insufficient to excite either layer into emission. A voltage pulse is momentarily applied so as to excite the layer 22 into emission. After removal of the voltage pulse, the operating point of the layer 22 is such that the alternating voltage divides so as to excite, as required, either or both layers. In accordance with the value of the voltage pulse, any colour mixture of the colours emitted by the two layers can be displayed. The voltage pulse can be supplied by an X-Y arrangement of electrodes (14, 26) or by an electron or light beam. The invention can be extended to three or more layers of electroluminescent material.

Reducing the thickness (T) reduces the number of electron beams reflected by an end surface (11) to reach the screen without being shielded by the frame (2), thus making it possible to suppress halation that tends to occur in an image receiving tube device having a high deflection angle.

A color picture display device having a shadow mask is provided comprising a cathode ray tube (CRT) having a gun (1) for generating at least two electron beams mutually different colors and a display screen (2). The screen has phosphor deposits for emitting light of different colors. The device has a deflection system (3) for scanning the electron beams across the display screen (2) in a pattern of successive, substantially parallel lines, each line being scanned in a scanning direction. The device further comprises means for diverging the landing points on the screen for at least one of the beams with respect to one of the other beams in a direction other than the scanning direction, and means for interpolation of color video data, used to control the beam intensity, in order to reduce shift errors due to the diverged beams. Further, a method for operation of such a color picture display device is disclosed.

In a color picture tube, a phosphor screen (2) is formed on an inner face of a face panel, which is formed of a plurality of phosphor lines (17b, 17g, and 17r) in the form of stripes, and a color selecting electrode (5) opposed to the phosphor screen (2) is provided. The color selecting electrode (5) has a plurality of apertures (11) and bridges (15) each separating the adjacent apertures from each other in a direction along the phosphor lines. In the vicinities of shadows (19) of the bridges (15) formed as a result of projection by electron beams, each of light emitting regions in which the phosphor lines emit light by irradiation with the electron beams has a part in which a wide portion (20) of a greater width than a basic width Wb of the light emitting region is provided. Darkening of the phosphor screen can be compensated, which is caused by the shadows of the bridges shading the phosphor lines. Thus, a decrease in the luminance of the phosphor screen and picture noise that are caused by the shadows of the bridges can be suppressed.
