摘要： In a forty megabit per second TDM signalling system in which twenty 2 megabit per second signalling streams are combined, one of the twenty primary signalling streams is inverted and substituted for one of the other signalling streams. By using adjacent channels the forty megabit signal stream has a guaranteed change of data at least once every twenty bits. The system facilitates clock recovery and synchronisation in apparatus employing bi-phase mark encoded data.

摘要： An optical demodulator in which a local oscillator reference signal and a frequency shift keyed modulated input signal are optically combined by means of an optical multiport junction (e.g. fig. 2). These signals are detected to produce phase-diverse electrical signals (I and Q; A, B and C) at beat frequency and electrically processed (fig. 3 or 4) to provide a demodulated signal. The electrical processing circuitry is phase discriminating and thus produces a signal in which the amplitude is dependent upon the lead/lag phase relationship of the detected signals (I and Q; A, B and C). The local oscillator (3) runs at a frequency midway between the FSK signal tones so that the lead or lag of phase is directly related to the frequency shift coding. 摘要： A method of, and an apparatus for, operating an optical modulator (8) are described. The modulator is of a type having an optical attenuation versus voltage response which is cyclic and which includes an input (34) to which the application of a bias voltage (v bias ) moves the modulator's response along the voltage axis to maintain the modulator's response at a desired voltage position. The apparatus comprises a bias voltage generator (32) for generating a bias voltage (v bias ) which comprises the sum of a first (v fixed ) and a second (v var ) voltage component. The first component (v fixed ) is fixed during normal operation and is selected to correspond to the expected bias voltage required for maintaining the modulator's response at a desired voltage position. The apparatus further comprises means (28, 30) for detecting the position of the modulator's response and adjusting the second voltage component (v var ) to maintain the response at the desired voltage position. Additionally the apparatus includes means (42) for detecting when the bias voltage (v bias ) approaches the limit of the available bias voltage range; means (36) for adjusting the first voltage component (v fixed ) until it is equal to the sum of the bias voltage and a voltage corresponding to one or more half cycles of the modulator's response; and means (38) for setting the second voltage component (v var ) to zero.

The bearer connections carry various media (e.g. audio, video, data) between the parties, who individually may have access to some or all of the total set of media in use in the conference call, and each medium may utilise a different topography of bearer connections. By providing for the conference call a signalling protocol which is independent of bearer connections and of the signalling protocols used to establish those connections, the conference call can be established, controlled and finally terminated in a manner that is independent of the topology of any of the media involved.
