A deformable area (58) is provided between the cartridge-receiving slot (50) and the cutter head body (42). The deformable area (58) includes a flex area (58a') for controlling an amount of deformation of the deformable area when a clamping member (46) bears against a clamping pad (56). The invention provides for a cartridge assembly (10) including a cutting insert (12) that can be indexable to at least two cutting edges, thereby providing cost savings as compared to conventional cutter systems that use cutter blades that required to be entirely scraped when worn or broken.

The present invention provides a cutting insert, a rotating cutting tool holding said cutting insert and a cutting method using the tool which is able to prevent the occurrence of burrs and to cut a smooth finished surface. In a rotating cutting tool which carries a plurality of cutting inserts, at least one insert is made of single crystal diamond 3A, and the minor cutting edge of the insert has an arc shaped portion whose radius is in the range of 10 mm or more to 500 mm or less. A high hard material other than single crystal diamond, for example PCD 3B, is used for the remainder of the cutting inserts. It is preferable that a cutting edge of single crystal diamond 3A be projected to the rotating axis direction in the range of 0.01 mm or more to 0.05 mm or less, compared with the cutting edges of high hard material.

The invention relates to a side and face milling cutter in which cutting inserts are carried in cartridges (5) that are accommodated in recesses along the periphery of the milling cutter. The cartridges are clamped by means of wedges (4), each cartridge having a serrated surface (11) located on the trailing side of the cartridge, which side cooperates with a correspondingly serrated surface in said recess. The wedge is 'negative', i.e., it tapers radially inwards. This gives a reliable centrifugal security of both cartridge and wedge. Further, the recesses (3) widen outwardly, which makes possible strong milling cutters bodies whose recesses are relatively simple to manufacture.

There is also an indexable insert having opposed top and bottom surfaces joined by a peripheral wall to form a polygonal body when viewed in plan. The peripheral wall on each side of the insert forms a cutting edge at the juncture of one of the top and bottom faces and a clearance face on each side of the insert joins a peripheral wall and the other of the top and bottom faces. The milling cutter further comprises means for holding the insert in the pocket so that one of the top or bottom surfaces abuts the back wall.

An improved cutting cartridge for rotary cutting tools is disclosed. The cutting cartridges are designed to be disposable and serve to permit the rotary cutting tools to be cheaply and quickly equipped with new cutting inserts without substantial effort, cost, or extensive time. The cutting cartridge essentially consists of a stator which is retained on a rotary cutting tool adapted to receive it. A rotor and a cutting insert are rotatably assembled on the stator and appropriately retained thereon.
