The present invention is a label system and method for label alignment and placement on a container. The label system includes a first label or a container whereby the first label includes alignment symbology and a second label having an alignment area corresponding to the alignment symbology of the first label. The second label is positioned on the container whereby the alignment area of the second label is aligned with the alignment symbology of the first label. The method for label alignment and placement comprises the steps of (i) providing a container with identification information and a label bearing area; (ii) scanning the identification information; (iii) processing the identification information; (iv) printing indicia on a label at a position defined by the identification information; and (v) placing the label on the container with the indicia positioned at the desired predetermined location.

The apparatus comprises a supply roll (36) including a backing (40) and a plurality of security tags (38) attached thereto for supplying the electronic security tags. The dispense modes include an on-demand mode in which labels (L') are automatically printed and dispensed as previously printed labels are removed from the labeler. In a manual mode, the labeler is responsive to the manual actuation of a trigger switch (195) to print and dispense a label. The labeler is also responsive to an on line trigger command received from a host device to print and dispense a label. Further, a strip mode allows strips of labels to be automatically printed on demand or in response to the actuation of the trigger switch. An on-demand sensor (60) is employed to detect the presence or absence of a label dispensed from the labeler in the on-demand modes. Further, the quantity of labels or strips of labels automatically dispensed in the on-demand modes may be limited to a specified quantity.

An electronic labeling apparatus (1) is disclosed which includes a printing mechanism (18) with a printhead (70) adapted for horizontal travel across an assembly (5,91,96) of identification devices (6) to be imprinted. A web edge sensor (85) is attached to the printhead (70) for concurrent travel therewith. In traversing horizontally across the assembly (5,91,96) the web edge sensor (85) provides a signal to a microprocessor (100) which indicates the presence or absence of the assembly (5,91,96) under the current position of the sensor (85). The microprocessor (100) also receives a timing signal from the printing mechanism (18) indicative of the position of the printhead (70). Based on the timing signal and the signal from the web edge sensor (85), the microprocessor (100) measures a current width of the assembly (5,91,96). The assembly (5,91,96) is especially adapted for use with the invention, and includes notches (90) having a width different than the nominal width of the assembly (5,91,96), each notch (90) being in a fixed relative position with respect to one of the identification devices (6,95,97). The microprocessor (100) is thereby able to control feeding of the assembly (5,91,96) to register the identification devices (6,95,97) for printing by discriminating the current measured width of the assembly (5,91,96) between the nominal width and the width at a notch (90).
