In a method of determining amounts of condensable species present in a gas containing condensable species a probe is placed into a gas containing condensable species. The probe has a plurality of spaced apart contacts on an outer non-conductive surface. That surface is heated at a selected heating rate and then cooled at a selected cooling rate over a selected time period. During that time period current flow between the contacts and the temperature of the non-conductive surface is monitored over the selected time period. Peaks in a plot of the current flow over the selected time period and the temperature for the time corresponding to each peak are then correlated to the condensable species has a kinetic dew point at each identified temperature. The identified temperature for each identified species is compared to a predetermined correlation of dew point temperature and concentration for that species to determine the concentration of that condensable species present in the gas.

This invention is constituted in such that a filter 2 which has caught PM contained in engine emission is placed in a heating furnace 1, and firstly, the filter 2 is heated at a predetermined temperature while passing an inert gas into the heating furnace 1 to evaporate the SOF and sulfate contained in PM, and the evaporated SOF is oxidized into CO 2 , and the evaporated sulfate is reduced into SO 2 . Thereafter, the filter 2 is heated while passing oxygen into the heating furnace 1 to oxidize the PM remaining on said filter 2 to have it generate CO 2 , and the CO 2 is analyzed with the gas analyzer unit 15.

A sulfur dioxide detector embodying an SO₂-oxidant bioagent comprises a bio-membrane (40) located at one end of an oxygen concentration sensor (2), the bio-membrane (40) consisting of the bioagent (e.g. Thiobacillus thiooxidons, Thiobacillus ferroxidons or an enzyme devided from such a microorganism) provided between an immobilized membrane (41a) and a gas permeable membrane (41b). The sensor (2) has an electrode (60) in contact with the immobilized membrane (41a) of the bio-membrane (40). A dish-shaped cell (32) has an open end which is in contact with the gas permeable membrane (41b) so that sulfurous acid in an SO₂-containing solution supplied to the cell (32) during use is oxidized to sulfuric acid so as to change the output from the sensor (2). An inlet hole (33) and an outlet hole (34) are formed on a sidewall of the cell (32) with the outlet hole (34) located directly above the inlet hole (33) so that foam produced during use, when the SO₂-containing solution is supplied to the dish-shaped cell (32) through the inlet hole (33), can be drained from the outlet hole (34).
