An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging method and apparatus are presented which separates broadband linear and nonlinear echo signal components while simultaneously distinguishing the effects of motion. The inventive method maps ultrasonic echo signals in the r.f. (time) domain to Doppler shift frequencies in the Doppler domain in a way that depends upon the linearity of the echoes. The inventive method does this by analyzing the phase shifts between successive echoes. Apparatus is described in which a Doppler echo ensemble is acquired by a transmit sequence of cyclically phase-varying waveforms. When the echoes of the ensemble are combined during Doppler processing, the resulting Doppler spectrum is divided into separate regions, with odd harmonics (e.g., linear signal components) residing in one region and even harmonics (e.g., second harmonic signal components) residing in another region. In a preferred embodiment a Doppler wall filter is used to delineate a particular type of signal information for processing, such as tissue motion, harmonic contrast agent, or tissue harmonic imaging information.

Each activation area (22, 24, 26) has a unique assigned function relating to processing of the ultrasound images with an indication of the function being displayed on the activation area (22, 24, 26). A processor (16) is coupled to the touchscreen (18) for detecting a touch on the activation areas (22, 24, 26) and performing the function associated with each activation area (22, 24, 26) upon being touched. In this manner, all UI controls can be implemented as virtual controls by assigning the function of each control to an activation area (22, 24, 26) so that the user can simply touch the activation area and effect the desired control.

A user adjusts a position and an orientation of a probe (10) so that these marks match. The guidance display has a plurality of indicators provided corresponding to a plurality of coordinate components. Each indicator displays proximity and match for each coordinate component. With the probe operation support information, it is possible to quickly and easily match a current diagnosis part to a past diagnosis part.

An ultrasonic image apparatus is provided in which a diagnostic object is separated from the background to show the separated object in a three dimensional image. Here, a contour of a target object is automatically separated and extracted and the extracted information is used to visualize the object in three dimension. Thus, the object can be visualized in three dimension based on the extracted information, to thereby observe the shape of the object without having a physical treatment such as a surgical operation. It is also possible to display the shape of the two dimensional cross-section on a monitor in the case that the object is cut at a certain angle without running a surgical operation. Also, since the shape information of the three dimensional object can be obtained additionally, the volume of the apparatus necessary for diagnosis can be obtained without making a particular additional calculation.

A three-dimensional image of flowing fluid or moving tissue using velocity or power Doppler data is displayed by using an ultrasound scanner that collects velocity or power data in a cine memory to form a volume of pixel data. Average or median pixel values are projected (86) on an image plane by casting rays through the data volume. As the ray passes through each scan plane, a data value is assigned to the ray at that point. At each scan plane, the assigned pixel data value is tested (88) to see if it exceeds a noise threshold. For a given ray, pixel data values above the detection threshold are accumulated (90) until a pixel data value falls below the detection threshold (92). A minimum number of pixel data values exceeding the threshold are required for each ray before the average of the accumulated values is processed and/or the median value is selected (94). When all pixels along a given ray have been tested, the projection is complete and the average or median projection is then displayed. Uniformity within the projected image and the sharpness of edges are enhanced by projecting average or median pixel values instead of maximum pixel values.
