A mail documentation file is created containing the total weight of the mail batch, the total payment for the mail batch and mailer identification, all of which are digitally signed to facilitate a subsequent verification of the integrity of the data. The digital signature is included as part of the mail documentation file. The mail batch and mail documentation file are submitted to a carrier distribution system. The carrier processes the batch of mail (802) and the mail documentation file as part of the carrier distribution process to determine the total weight of the batch of mail and verify the weight of the actual batch of mail in comparison to the total weight of the batch of mail as set forth in the mail documentation file.

A system and method is provided for refilling a postage metering system (100) that includes a host (114) coupled to a postal security device (PSD) (112). A user enters a first request for postage refill which is transmitted to a meter server (120). The meter server (120) transmits a request for a PSD audit to the postage metering system (100). PSD audit data is signed with a first secret key stored in the PSD (112) to produce an audit message that includes a first signature and the PSD audit data. The audit message is transmitted to the meter server (120) which transmits the first signature to a key management system (130) which then verifies the first signature using a second secret key stored in the key management system (130). The PSD audit data is verified at the meter server (120) which then constructs a second request for meter refill and transmits it to a meter recharging data center (140). The meter recharging data center (140) generates a refill combination and transmits it to the meter server (120). The refill combination is transmitted from the meter server (120) to the key management system (130) for signature using the second secret key to produce a refill message that is transmitted to the meter server (120). The refill message includes a second signature and the refill combination. The refill message is transmitted to the PSD (112) which verifies the signature and the refill combination using the first secret key and credits the PSD (112) for the amount.

The terminal contains a modular printer unit which has a printhead and a dedicated microprocessor physically permanently bonded together such that the printhead microprocessor cannot be physically tampered with without disabling the printhead. The modular printer unit includes a first supply of visible ink and a second supply of invisible ink, and an internal program for printing the value indicia with visible ink and an authentication code, which uniquely corresponds to the value indicia, with invisible ink. The invisible value indicia can be subsequently verified as authentic by machine reading of said invisible authentication code and comparing the authentication code for correspondence to the value indicia.

The portable member or device (104) may have a housing with a register means within said housing. The postage prepayment value is stored in the register (346). The plurality of discrete items of encrypted data is stored in the housing with each of the items of encrypted data adapted to be formatted for printing. Means within said housing are coupled to the plurality of discrete items of encrypted data and to said prepayment register for enabling at least one selected item of encrypted data to be communicated outside of the housing if the value stored in register is at least equal to the specific value of the selected item of encrypted data.

Das Verfahren umfaßt Schritte zur Bildung einer Markierungssymbolreihe aus einer verschlüsselten Kombinationszahl, welche aus mindestens einer ersten Zahl (Summe aller Portowerte seit dem letzten Nachladedatum), einer dritten Zahl (Portowert) und einer vierten Zahl (aus der Seriennummer) zusammengesetzt ist, und ermöglicht eine Überprüfung des Sicherheitsabdrucks in einer Postbehörde, wobei unter Einbeziehung weiterer in der Datenzentrale gespeicherter und/oder errechneter Daten Manipulationen erkannt werden. Eine Anordnung zur Überprüfung (29) weist ein Markierungslesegerät (24) auf, bestehend aus einer CCD-Zeilenkamera (241), D/A-Wandler (243), Komparator (242) und Encoder (244), welche über eine Ein/Ausgabeeinheit (245) mit einem Eingabemittel (25) verbunden sind. Um mittels eines Computers (26), Speicher- (28) und Ausgabemittel (27) Markierungsdaten auszuwerten, ist das Eingabemittel (25) mit der Datenzentrale verbunden.
