On-screen arrows have their display characteristics changed according to user actions. Similar program listings are displayed only once when using search program listings. Information from local information services is provided in program guide display screens that are configurable by a main facility. Users are provided with an opportunity to centrally lock and unlock programs, and to bypass locks when desired.

When stream capacities become available, rather than scheduling the movie immediately the scheduler delays performance of the video until just prior to expiration of the maximum wait tolerance time of the longest waiting one of the pending performance requests. In the interim, additional streams can join queue. When the performance occurs all performance requests on the queue are served from the a single stream provided from the assigned stream capacity.

摘要： A bi-directional broadcasting system for preparing a plurality of pay video programs and a plurality of channels on the broadcasting side and designating one of the plurality of channels according to the selection of a specific pay video program by the receiving side to thereby broadcast the selected pay video program through the selected channel as occasion demands. In the bi-directional broadcasting system, a predetermined CM is broadcasted according to the allowable degree of video reception by each viewer prior to the broadcasting of the pay video program selected on the receiving side. A dip switch attached to a receiver is set according to the allowable degree of video reception by each viewer. Information about the setting of the dip switch is transmitted to the broadcasting side through a modem upon selecting the pay video program. Further, a control unit for controlling the frequency of reception of CM in the form of a picture is provided in a remote control transmitter. According to the above construction, the broadcasting side can properly correspond to the allowable degree of CM reception by the viewer. When the CM is sent to the viewer, the viewer can reliably watch it.

摘要： A method and apparatus (10) for determining the channel of a plurality of predetermined channels to which a remotely controlled receiver (12) is tuned. A viewer transmitter device (24) includes a keyboard (26) for receiving viewer entered selections and a remote transmitter which transmits infrared, ultra­sonic, radio frequency or other radiated control sig­nals for each of the viewer selections. A receiver device (28) in a channel detection system (10) receives a signal in the selected transmission medium, and immediately signals a jamming device (44) to broadcast interference which precludes the remotely controlled receiver (12) from identifying and acting upon the transmitted control signal. The receiver device (28) applies the received signal to a processor device (30) that performs a stored program to determine if the received signal corresponds to a transmitted con­trol signal from the viewer transmitter device (24) and, if so, to identify the channel to which the moni­tored remotely controlled receiver (12) is to be tuned. An associated memory device (52) is used for storing the identified channel reception data. The processor device (30) identifies the user selection and either applies a corresponding control signal to a second transmitter device (48) which transmits a control signal of sufficient strength to overcome the inter­ference, or instructs the jamming device (44) to cease the broadcasting of interfering signals. In either case, the remotely controlled receiver (12) will now receive and implement the viewer selection. The pro­cessor device (30) will periodically broadcast a com­mand to the remotely controlled receiver (12) contain­ing the last identified channel data to ensure that a viewer does not manually adjust the channel being viewed.

摘要： A communication method and a data collection and transmission system are provided having at least one remotely located monitoring station. A central computer is arranged for bidirectional communication with each of the monitoring stations. Each of the mon­itoring stations includes a storage and forward unit for communicating with the central computer and at least one sensor unit for monitoring a predetermined geographically proximate variable and for processing and storing predetermined operational data. The stor­age and forward unit includes a real time clock that is arranged to accurately maintain a real time indicative signal. A local area network connects the storage and forward unit and each of the sensor units. A coded message having a predetermined sequential data format is used for bidirectional communications between the storage and forward unit and the sensor units. A real-time coded message is provided by the storage and forward unit to the sensor units. The storage and for­ward unit includes a counter for counting at a prede­fined rate for identifying a delay time period prior to the transmission of the real-time coded message. Each sensor unit includes a counter for counting at the pre­defined rate to identify a second time delay period re­sponsive to a received real-time coded message from the storage and forward unit. The real-time coded message includes the first identified time delay period that is combined with the second identified time delay period to determine the current time value by the sensor unit.

摘要： A subscription television system and method in which billing information regarding programs actually viewed by a subscriber of the system is accumulated (20) over nondedicated telephone lines. A scrambled television program signal containing a block of television program material (14), a program identification code (18) unique to the block of program material, and a program category code (18), is broadcast (16). The codes are preferably included in the vertical retrace interval of the video portion of the program signal and the transmitted program signal is selectively received at a subscriber station (12) and selectively unscrambled (24) to permit viewing of the block of program material being transmitted in response to subscriber action (30) indicating acceptance for viewing of the block of program material. The received program category code is compared (92) with a locally generated category code (90) to determine whether the program is acceptable for viewing. The program identification code is detected (64) and stored (68) for subsequent transmission in response to the subscriber action indicating acceptance for viewing of the received block of program material. The program identification code stored at the subscriber station is selectively accessed from a remote location (10) over telephone lines on other than a real time basis (e.g., a periodic basis) to thereby provide billing information at the remote location as to programs actually viewed by the subscriber. The subscriber can thus be billed monthly or on some desired periodic basis for programs actually viewed during the preceding period. The billing period can be varied (32, 70) from the remote location (10) to provide a means to control the number of programs which a subscriber can receive.
