A loudspeaker has a diaphragm (20) with a voice coil (32a, 32b) disposed about its perimeter and extending in a gap (25) into which the flux of an annular rare earth magnet (10) is focused. The voice coil may have two or more windings that are connected in parallel, and may, e.g., be layered on top of one another, so that the impedance of the coil, as well as its depth in the front/back direction of motion, are low. The voice coil is preferably implemented using a polyamide form or bobbin (30), which has patterned lead-in conductors (31) embedded therein to bring power to wire windings on the perimeter of the coil. A diaphragm may be domed to provide further clearance, and is mass loaded by a material (22) such as butyl rubber to lower its resonance and improve performance. A flat diaphragm may also be used, and pole pieces (11) may be formed of materials such as chrome vanadium instead of cheaper iron materials to further reduce the overall thickness and weight without sacrificing the gains in efficiency and engine strength of basic construction.

The typical micro-transducer dedicated for mobile phones and headphones produces at high output in small back enclosure significant distortion in the acoustical output. These typical micro-transducers are designed for very high sensitivity and their mechanical suspension compliances are designed for worst case scenario, free air environment or a very large back enclosure (were the air stiffness from the back enclosure is much lower than the mechanical transducer suspension stiffness). This leads to poor low frequency response, high distortion, non-linear SPL characteristic and unnecessary high system resonance fre- quency when the transducer is placed in a small back enclosure. The Soft Suspension Long throw (SSL) micro-transducer has been designed with an improved non-circular shaped magnetic system, a low density/high Young's modulus thermal conducting diaphragm, a large-area non-circularly shaped diaphragm area, a non-circular shaped voice coil and a soft long-throw suspension which has been designed so that the SSL micro-transducer only functions properly when mounted in a small back enclosure. The combination of these inventions leads to a transducer architecture offering significant improvements in overall distortion, high RMS power handling, extended bass reproduction, also in compact volumes, and an overall flat frequency response. The combined result of several inventions is a significant overall improvement in perceived sound quality.

The speaker is able to provide high level acoustic output with low distortion rate in a wide frequency range with a very small and slim structure and it may prevent a disconnection of a lead connecting the voice coil and the electrode. The speaker includes a yoke, a permanent magnet, a plate, a vibration plate integrated with a first suspension, a voice coil, a frame and a protector. The speaker further comprises a second suspension made of highly resilient material installed between the plate and the vibration plate, and is characterized in that the voice coil is attached to the lower surface of the second suspension and the vibration plate is attached to the upper surface of the second suspension and the outer periphery of the second suspension is fixed to the frame.

A diaphragm for use in a speaker is manufactured using a plurality of thin wooden boards having flat rectangular shapes. The thin wooden boards are impregnated with a resin; then, a plurality of cutouts, which are elongated along wooden fiber directions or which are elongated in directions crossing wooden fiber directions, are formed in the thin wooden boards. Instead of the cutouts, it is possible to form a plurality of folded portions elongated in directions crossing wooden fiber directions. The thin wooden boards are integrally laminated together in such a way that the wooden fiber directions thereof mutually cross with a prescribed angle therebetween. The thin wooden boards integrally laminated together are subjected to thermal pressing so as to form a wooden vibrator serving as the diaphragm. Thus, it is possible to easily produce the diaphragm having a high strength and superior acoustic characteristics without causing defects.
