A milking system includes an optical detector for detecting radiation emitted and/or reflected by a part of an animal, the optical detector having a housing with a window that is substantially transparent to the radiation. The milking system further includes a cleaning device for cleaning the window of the optical detector. The cleaning device includes a nozzle connected to a source of steam, and in operation the nozzle directs steam against the window of the optical detector. The use of steam to clean the window provides heating and rinsing free of impurities and minerals that can leave deposits and residue on the window and which, over time, may degrade the operation of the optical detector.

Methods performed in an animal management system are disclosed. The animal management system comprises a control device configured to control various farm devices of the system and each of the farm devices is individually controllable by the control device according to pre-defined settings. The disclosure also describes corresponding animal management systems, portable electronic devices, control devices, computer programs and computer program products. In one disclosed method a portable electronic device, e.g. a mobile phone, sends 401 a message comprising identification data of an individual animal to the control device. Furthermore, it sends 402 a request message to the control device for requesting the control device to change a pre-defined setting for a specific farm device. Next, the control device receives 403 the message comprising the identification data. Also, the control device receives 404 the request message. In response thereto, the control device changes 405 the pre-defined setting temporarily on the basis of the received identification data. Hence, the predefined setting can be overruled for an individual animal.

An automatic milking arrangement and method in which a number of different milking equipment modules are provided and are each selectable to be taken to a milking location, where an animal to be milked is located, by a freely-moveable self-driven device (1) having a remote controlled guidance system to move and steer the device automatically. Processing means are provided for selecting the milking equipment module to be taken to the milking location based on data relating to the particular to be milked stored in a database, the selected milking equipment module having at least one element with a characteristic parameter, such as a milk receiver (15) with a certain capacity or a teat cup (13) with a teat cup liner of a certain shape or size, that is different to the characteristic parameter(s) of the corresponding element(s) of other different milking equipment modules. The processing means can be arranged to establish an order of preference for use of the different milking equipment modules in milking the particular animal and to select the module highest in the order that is available to be taken to the milking location. The milking equipment modules can be integrated with respective self-driven devices (1) of may comprise a milking unit (71) demountable from the self-driven device at the milking location.
