An optical multiplexing/demultiplexing device with variable branching ratio is disclosed. The device includes a first collimator lens assembly having a first collimator lens (14), and first and second optical fibers F 1 and F 2 which have distal ends thereof optically coupled to the lens, and are away from each other by a distance "d," an optical axis of the lens being positioned at a midpoint therebetween, a second collimator lens assembly having a second collimator lens (15) and a third optical fiber F 3 which has a distal end thereof optically coupled to the lens, being away from an optical axis of the lens by a distance "d/2" and reflection mirror means. The reflection mirror means (17) reflects and couples a part or all of a parallel beam of an expanded mode field area, which is emitted from the first optical fiber and formed on a reference plane, to the second optical fiber, or transmits and connects all or a part of the parallel beam to the third optical fiber.

An optical fiber assembly having a hermetic seal portion (1) includes a optical fiber assembly (10) and a metal pipe (20). The optical fiber assembly (10) includes a metallized portion (12) where a portion exposed by peeling off a resin coating of the optical fiber assembly (10) is coated with metal. The metal pipe (20) includes a feedthrough hole (21), an uncovered portion (22), a brazed portion (30) and an adhesive-fixed portion (40). The feedthrough hole (21) has a length necessary to cover a part of the metallized portion (12) and a part of the coated portion (11a) leading to one end of the metallized portion (12). The uncovered portion (22) has a housing groove (28) leading to the feedthrough hole (21) and contains a remainder of the metallized portion (12) and a part of the coated portion (11b) leading to the other end of the metallized portion (12). The brazed portion (80) hermetically seals the optical fiber assembly (10) to the metal pipe (20) by brazing the metallized portion (12) and the inner surface of the feedthrough hole (21) near a slanted upward opening of the feedthrough hole (21) on the housing groove side. The adhesive-fixed portion (40) allows the optical fiber assembly (10) to be disposed on the uncovered portion (22) adhere to the metal pipe (20) and fixed thereto.

A variable attenuation type optical power attenuator employs a fixed ferrule (8) and a rotating ferrule (9) that have their end surfaces polished, together with the central optical fibers thereof, to be formed into inclined end surfaces (12,13). An alignment sleeve (17) supports the fixed and rotating ferrules with optical fibers so that the distal ends thereof are opposed and that the ferrules may be relatively rotated. The assembly of the paired ferrules is supported in a rotating housing (39) by a fixed housing (18). The variable attenuation type optical power attenuator adjusts the distance between the optical fiber end of the fixed ferrule and that of the rotating ferrule by rotating the rotating housing to change the relative rotational angle in relation to the fixed housing. The new rotational angle thus obtained is maintained by the engagement between the face ratchet (28) of a ratchet ring (26) provided on the fixed housing and the face ratchet (30) of the rotating housing.

A reflecting-mirror-type variable optical attenuator according to the present invention is formed of a collimator lens (12) with optical fibers in which two optical fibers (8,9) are attached to a rod lens (12) in respective positions off-centered from the optical axis of the rod lens and a linearly movable reflecting mirror (20). A phenomenon that the optical axis of a light beam emitted from one optical fiber deviates from the optical axis of the collimator lens by the angle according to the off-centered distance on the surface of the rod lens is utilized. That is, by changing the distance (S) between the surface of the reflecting mirror arranged to be linearly movable in the optical axis direction and the surface of the rod lens, input light from one fiber is attenuated to be output to the other. A guide pin (16) and an electrical motor (21) are used to control the mirror displacement.
